Ryan raises his eyebrows. “I mean from what I researched, you’re probably mentally unstable right now, but I wouldn’t know, because you’re hiding it very well. Don’t you feel drained yet, or are you still convincing yourself that you’re in love and experiencing normal couple issues?”
What the fuck is he talking about?
Unable to keep my anger from erupting, I get up from the table and make my way towards the door, but Ryan follows me outside as fast as he can and grabs my arm.
“Get the hell away from me. You’re psychotic, you know that?” I try to pull my arm away, but his grip is strong.
“Who knows, you seem to like that type,” Ryan says, as he pulls out a small brown envelope from inside his jeans pocket and hands it to me. “I know your boyfriend is rich and amazing, but I loved you once Parker, and I swore that I was not going to go down without a fight. But now I really don’t give a shit about you. I just want you to hurt a little for treating me like shit and not giving me a chance to be a good guy.”
“What is this?” I ask as he presses the envelope into my palm.
“Why don’t you find out for yourself?” He let go of my arm and walks away, disappearing into the crowds.
I walk home as the rain continues to fall relentlessly. When I reach the apartment, everything is in darkness. I check Lex’s room and sure enough, she’s there tucked in bed with her purple lava lamp on and bathing the room in its warm glow.
Taking the envelope, I drop down onto the couch, my throat thick and my fingers trembling, not from the cold or the rain, but from Ryan’s words:
“I’m wondering, what you’ll do when you find out who your boyfriend really is.”
So I ask myself, do I really want to know?
