“So you’re still with her? I must say I’m surprised, they usually last a week,” she says.

I glance up at her. “Not always.”

“I think she’s a keeper.”

I want to roll my eyes, but my phone buzzes again and I stare at the screen.I’m not sure if she’s a keeper, but she’s pretty entertaining in bed. There are two new text messages from an unknown number.

“She’s pretty, smart, and ambitious…”

I zone out of my mother’s conversation as I slide my finger across the screen and head into the chat.

The first text readsSURPRISE!

And the second is a video. I lower my media volume and press play on the video and immediately, I regret opening it.

It’s taken from a building across the Skyline Hotel and the lens zooms right into the figure on the rooftop.

Blonde hair, rosy lips, my heart is beating loudly in my ears and my face and hands suddenly feel unnaturally hot as I watch her, and then a masked figure appears behind her, before shoving her off the building.

The camera moves as her body falls. It looks so weird and fast and when she hits the ground, I flinch.

Diana.

“Hey, are you listening to me? What’s wrong?” My mother reaches over and ruffles my hair.

“I have to go.” My throat is suddenly dry and I can feel the sweat dripping down the back of my neck.

She frowns. “What do you mean? We’re going to eat dinner now.”

I stand up and grab my car keys from the countertop along with my jacket before leaving the kitchen.

“Hudson, what’s going on?” My mother follows behind.

Matt comes out of the living room with his cellphone in his hand. “Did you guys see that article of that woman jumping to her death in Manhattan?”

“Where’s everyone going?” Matt calls out when he realizes no one is listening to him.

I want to fucking punch him because right now my head is swimming with rage and panic, but I just keep walking.

“Hudson,” my mother says. “It’s so late, where are you going?”

“I need to meet my professor, something came up.” I give her the first lie at the top of my head.

“At this part of the night?” She doesn’t believe me. I can hear the dismay in her voice, but I can’t deal with that now.

“Yeah, he always works late nights.” I turn toward my mother before I can leave through the front door. “I’m sorry, okay? I’ll make it up to you.”

Her eyes search mine. “Did something happen?”

How will I explain that someone is trying to fuck with me and my mind? How will I explain that I’m involved in such fucked up shit? She thinks I sit on a throne, so it’s best to leave it that way.

“No,” I say and kiss her cheek before leaving.

A storm hums in the sky as I drive toward Manhattan and my phone pings with a new text from Parker.

We need to speak —P

I let out a deep breath.Not right now,I think.

I’m not sure what I’m feeling and my brain can’t quite name or analyze the emotion I’m feeling but I know I haven’t felt like this before. Usually, there’s nothing.

It’s like a sick internal pain. And I can’t stop thinking of her over and over again. I never listen to her.

Diana.
