“Sir, I have a stack of bills coming in from a design company…Do you know anything about this?” Alisha asked, showing me the invoices on her iPad.

I glanced through them, not recognizing any of them, but Rose’s signature was on the bottom. “It’s fine.” I handed the tablet back over.

“Are you sure? Some of these invoices are for a lot of money.”

“I told her she could redecorate the apartment. I’m pretty sure I’m going to regret that,” I laughed.

“Is this billed under the company or—”

“Personal. And make sure no one in accounting fucks this up. The last thing I need is to be audited and have the fucking IRS thinking I’m using company money for personal expenses. Or Jerry Wright, for that matter.”

“I’ll make sure Carmen handles this. She’s the best accountant on staff.”

“How’s Daniels doing?”

“I’ve asked Carmen to keep an eye on him and turn in weekly reports. So far, she said he’s adapting well.”

“Good. That last thing I need is a repeat of what’s his face.”

As she turned to leave, I called Rose, hoping to catch her now before I had to go into my next meeting.

“Hello?”

“Is there a reason I have an invoice for over ten grand?”

“Is that all? The total should be much higher.”

“It is. That was just one of the invoices.”

“Well, expect more than that. I’m redecorating the entire place.”

“You’re not really painting the walls pink, are you?”

“Pink walls would not cost ten grand. However, I was thinking about tearing down a wall.”

“You have to check to make sure it’s not load-bearing,” I said quickly. God, that would be a fucking nightmare.

“I’m just joking. I’m not tearing down any walls. But I was thinking of turning one of the spare bedrooms into an office for you. How do you feel about deer heads?”

“I’m not having deer staring at me while I work.”

“Hmm…”

“Rose,” I warned. “You’d better not even think about it.”

“I just want it to be more homey.”

“I don’t even hunt. Do not put heads of any kind on my walls.”

“It’s not like they’re actually looking at you.”

“Doesn’t matter. There is no way I’m having dead animals on my walls.”

“So, does that mean I should also cancel the bearskin rug?”

I pinched the bridge of my nose, taking in a deep breath. “What happened to the woman that decorated the beach home so nicely?”
