“About an hour.”
“Did you sleep?” she asked, feeling guilty that Rose had stayed with her the whole time.
“I read for a while on my phone and then dozed off for a few minutes. I was enjoying holding my girl close. It helped soothe the lingering yucky feelings from your death leap.”
Katie rolled her eyes and sighed. “I’m sorry.”
“Mmhmm, how’s your butt?” Rose poked her through the blanket and Katie giggled.
“I don’t know yet. I guess it's stingy and throbby if I think about it.”
“You guess? I must be losing my skill.”
“Your skill is fine, Auntie. I promise I feel well and truly punished.”
“Good, but you still have something you have to do, now don’t you?”
Katie groaned and pulled the blanket over her head. “Do I have to?” she whined.
“You absolutely do.” Rose tugged down the blanket and handed her the phone. “Call now before the kids wake up.”
She sighed and took the phone. Rose already had Jeff’s number pulled up so Katie hit the call button and tried to anticipate just how bad this was going to be for her. She really didn’t want another spanking.
“Hey Rose,” Jeff answered without looking at the screen.
“It’s me, Daddy,” Katie informed him.
“Hi, babygirl. How are you? Did you have a nice nap?”
“How’d you know I took a nap?”
“Well, you look all snuggly and you still have that sweet sleepy look on your face, so it was an educated guess.”
“Oh,” Katie replied, unsure of how to say what she needed to say.
“Is everything okay? How’s the new playground?”
There was her chance, but she couldn't do it. Shoving the phone at Rose, she buried herself under the covers again.
“No way, little girl. You get out here and tell your Daddy what you did.”
“Uh oh, that doesn’t sound good. Katelyn, where are you?” Jeff’s voice changed from sweet to bossy Daddy in two-point-two seconds and Katie’s tummy flipped.
“I already got a spankin’,” Katie whined.
“Well, if you don’t want another one you better tell me what happened today,” Jeff warned.
Katie almost rolled her eyes. If she thought staying under the covers would get her Daddy to come home and spank her, she would have happily done so, but she knew that wasn’t the case. She pulled the covers down and peeked out, but she didn’t take the phone.
“I jumped off the climber onto the trampoline.” She rushed the words out before hiding again.
The phone was silent for a few seconds before she heard Jeff yell, “Hey Keith, you owe me twenty bucks.”
“What?” Keith, Rose, and Katie all said at the same time.
Katie flipped the covers back to figure out what was going on. To her surprise, Jeff looked like he was about ready to crack up laughing. Rose had a murderous glare aimed at the screen.
“What are you yelling about?” Keith’s voice got closer.
