“What are you doing?” Katie asked, suddenly unsure it was wise to push as hard as she had.
The phone rang in the other room and she knew exactly what he was doing. He was calling Rose, and since she was still on video chat with him, she would be able to hear every nail he put in her coffin.
“Wait, wait, Daddy. I’ll listen, I’m going. See!” She jumped off their bed and ran to the corner, but he ignored her.
“Hey Rose, can you come to our room for a second?” he asked into his phone.
“No! No, no, no, no! Daddy I’m sorry for being naughty,” Katie begged from the corner.
“Too late. You wanted to test me and I refuse to fail a test.”
Rose knocked before peeking her head in. “Everything okay?”
“Come on in, Rose. My little girl has decided that because I’m far away she can be forgetful and disobedient and not have to listen to her Daddy.”
“Oh, well we know that's not true. Little girls always have to listen to their Daddy.”
“I know. I’m sorry. I’ll listen and I’ll take my vitamins every day,” Katie whimpered.
“Vitamins?” Rose questioned.
“Yes, she has some she’s supposed to take and has apparently forgotten about them for who knows how long.”
“It's not like you asked me about it before now.” Katie pouted.
“You’re right, I haven’t and maybe I have dropped a few other balls because this is all new and weird for all of us, but that doesn’t mean once I figure it out you get to push and poke at me without getting a response you won’t like.”
“Okay, I’m sorry.”
“Good, I’m sorry too. I love you, little one. Stay put until I say you can come out. Rose, can I speak to you in the other room for a second?”
“Yep.”
Katie didn’t turn around to see what was happening, but when she heard Rose leave and close the door behind her she let out her breath. She didn’t know what he wanted to talk to her about but she was glad they were both gone for a second. It gave her a chance to collect herself as she tried to process what was going through her brain.
As much as she absolutely loved getting to live with Rose again, she missed Jeff. It was the longest they had been away from each other since they’d met and she hated it. Noah was a little trooper and Claire didn’t know better, but Katie was struggling. She needed her husband and Daddy back.
Feeling the tears welling in her eyes, she took a deep breath and tried to push them back. It was ridiculous to get upset because it would only make her feel worse and she didn’t want Jeff to think she couldn’t handle herself. She didn’t want him to feel guilty about something that was so completely out of everyone’s control.
The door opening behind her pulled her attention away from her thoughts.
“Good girl.” Jeff’s voice broke the silence. “Come here, please.”
Katie turned and headed back to the bed. She saw Rose standing off to the side and wondered if she would leave so she could have a couple more minutes alone with Jeff.
“I’m sorry, Daddy,” she said quietly.
“I know, honey. I’m sorry too. I just assumed with Auntie there I didn’t need to police your day-to-day things. I know Rose is more than capable of helping you with everything and I didn’t want you to feel suffocated.”
That made sense and she felt a little more guilty. He hadn't forgotten to check in on her, he just didn’t want to overwhelm her and she was easily overwhelmed.
“Thank you for thinking about my feelings. I’m sorry I was so naughty.”
“I know. And I’m going to make sure you don’t want to talk to me like that again, okay?”
“That doesn’t sound good.” Katie squirmed.
“It’s not going to feel good, either. Take your pants down and lay over the edge of the bed.”
