"You were not in trouble. You and I decided together that you would earn your show by doing the paperwork because it was hard for you to feel motivated to do it, and it's important. You didn't get in trouble for not doing it today, you got in trouble for being naughty."
"I was frustrated."
"I'm sorry you were frustrated and I'm sorry if my words made you feel like what you did wasn't important. That wasn't my intention, but that paperwork needs to get done."
"It's scary." Katie finally admitted out loud why she had been avoiding that assignment like the plague. "What if I mess something up and then something happens and it's all my fault?"
"Honey, nothing bad is going to happen because you answered some questions on a piece of paper. The only thing it will do is protect you and Noah and Claire. Don't you want to be protected?" Rose paused. "Don't you think Daddy and me and Uncle Keith want you to be protected?"
Katie nodded and Rose pulled her onto her lap and kissed the crown of her head. "Okay, then. I'm sorry I made you feel yucky. Forgive me?"
"Yes ma'am."
"Good girl."
Katie sniffled, calming down and thinking about all the things Rose had said as they rocked back and forth on the couch. She was so thankful that the never-ending spanking had finally stopped, and glad she had finally been able to voice what was going on with her.
"I'm really sorry, Auntie."
"I know sweetie and it's all done, you are all forgiven."
"So, I can watch my show now?" she asked hopefully.
"Are you aiming for another spanking so soon? Perhaps your Daddy has a belt I could borrow?"
"No, no, no!"
"Then don't be so sassy. You’re still grounded from TV, but I'm here now and tomorrow we will get your paperwork done and tackle whatever else is on that list of yours."
"Wait, you're staying? You didn't just come over here to spank me and then leave?"
"What kind of a responsible Auntie would I be to give you a punishment like that and then leave, silly girl?"
"But I thought you couldn't come over because of your Aunt coming to visit."
"Well, before your naughty little tirade I was going to tell you that Aunt Nancy and I had a lovely day together, and then I told her I already had plans and sent her on her way. I have my suitcases in the car. You're stuck with me until your Daddy gets home. Surprise." Rose smiled and lifted her arms in the air.
The relief that washed over Katie was all-consuming. Throwing her arms around Rose's neck, she couldn't help but burst into tears.
"Sweetie! Why are you crying? I thought you'd be happy." She wrapped Katie tightly in her arms.
"I am." She sobbed uncontrollably. "I'm really happy. I didn't want to be alone."
"Oh little one, shhh. It's all okay. You weren't ever alone; you had the kids."
"It's not the same," Katie cried, realizing just how much she had been fretting about being by herself.
"Okay, calm down. You're not going to be alone. I'm here and I promise not to leave until the guys are home. So don't even try to kick me out."
Katie giggled and then yawned.
"Somebody's tired. It's way past your bedtime, little one."
"Will you read to me?"
"Our book is out in my suitcase. I'll go get it. You be my good girl and go get ready for bed. Don't forget to brush your teeth and go potty. I'll be right in."
Katie blushed at the little reminders of how to get ready for bed, but deep down she loved it, and she loved bedtime stories with Auntie even more.
