Fabien’s grin widens.

"My name is Fabien. Now you know it from me."

"Mia," I say quickly.

Something inside me twists against telling him this false name. I know I'm here to gather evidence, to put these people behind bars for good, but lying to a man before I marry him seems wrong somehow.

And marrying him? I really hope I find the evidence first.

It all feels more wrong than most undercover stuff. I'm not pretending to be his contact, or a drug dealer. I'm pretending to be a woman who's marrying him.

Suddenly it occurs to me: there isn't a way for this to end where this man won't want me dead. Behind bars is definitely the safest place for him to be, from my perspective.

Even if I didn’t find the evidence. If I just escaped here with my life. He’d always hunt me.

To kill me.

We walk through the well-manicured grass. It's like green carpet. If it wasn't so cold, I'd take off my shoes. As it is, I'm glad I told Olivia I wouldn't wear the Jimmy Choo's she offered. The Versaces have a big fat heel keeping me stable on the lawn.

"Have you ever been to Faerie?" he asks me.

"No."

Shit. Was that the right answer? I think so. My brain keeps blanking, and I have to pray my answers match up with the truth, if anyone asks or finds out. If Mia Zedona has been to Faerie, and I just don't know about it, it could get me killed.

I feel like I've gone over the woman's whole life with Olivia, and I've been through every post and pic and video on her social media. Olivia told me things about Mia that no one knows. Guys she fucked, secrets she had.

And all of that is just gone from my brain as we walk together.

Come on, Lily, get it together!

"Chatty little thing, aren't you?" he says, grinning. "I could get used to this. Most women won't shut up. Are you this quiet in bed, too?"

At the mention of bed, I feel my skin flush again. The images of him holding me down and giving it to me like an animal flash back across my mind.

What the hell? I never have daydreams like this!

He gives me a smile like he knows exactly what I'm thinking of.

"If I'm with someone good, I make plenty of noise. How about you? Are you a screamer, Fabien?" I try to make the last part bite, but it's feeble.

It makes him laugh instead.

The heat in my skin turns intopissed offpretty quickly.

"In truth, no. I make some noise, but I'm not loud."

Something huge rustles in the bushes and I nearly scream. It bursts out, scurrying on six legs, low to the ground and gleaming black. It looks metal at first, but then I really see it.

It's the size of an alligator, but it's a bug. Like a giant beetle. It hisses as it passes us.

"It won't hurt you," he says. "Nothing will, here. These creatures will know you belong to me.”

"What about when you're not around? This place is…Wait, what did you say?”

“That you belong to me, Mia. There’s no point in pretending you don’t feel it.”

Suddenly, Fabien pulls me close, binding my arms and legs with his tentacles. Fire burns inside me at his touch. My body screams for him to keep going.
