CHAPTER SEVEN

LILY - MIA

It’s been a week. I’ve never been to Faerie before, and I've never met a god. But tonight I will.

What if this god can read minds? Would he look into my head and be able to pick out all of my secrets?

Or can he see the future? Fabien in handcuffs. Probably his father, too, and half the people in this mansion. What if the mountain god sees that and tells them all what's going to happen?

All I know is no one will tell me anything. Not even Fabien. They all just say to show respect to the mountain god and keep my mouth shut as much as possible. But no one will tell me what's supposed to happen.

They all sound a little scared, a little intimidated by this god. And that really worries me, because these aren’t people who scare easily. They're monsters. They scare other people.

When a knock at my door startles me, I leap out of bed. Fabien needs to tell me what's going to happen. I don't care if he thinks it's better if I don't know. I can't walk into this blind.

"Fabien, I--"

I open the door, and it isn't Fabien.

Standing there is a stern looking woman, red haired and green eyed. She's beautiful like a Fae maiden, and has pointed ears. No clothes cover her pale skin, and her perfect breasts point right at me. As my gaze travels down, I see the resemblance to Fae ends at her waist. Down below, instead of legs, she has a snake's tail, about a foot thick. It coils below her.

When she stands, she shifts slightly from right to left, an almost hypnotizing snake's dance.

"My name is Gabrielle," she says. She looks at my clothes and clucks her tongue disapprovingly. "Those’ll have to go. Go on now, off with them."

"Um...who are you?"

"I’m your attendant for the blessing ceremony. Count yourself lucky that I accepted."

"I-- but what about Olivia, she's my sister, couldn't she...?"

A slow smile spreads across Gabrielle's face.

"Go and see for yourself."

Her tone scares me so much that I run for the door separating my room from Olivia's. I wrench it open and she's there. Laying in bed.

"Olivia?"

She doesn't wake.

At her bedside, I gently touch her face. I give her a little shake. Her head lolls like a rag doll and she doesn't open her eyes. Her steady breathing never changes rhythm either.

"Olivia?" I whisper in her ear.

Gabrielle stands in the doorway, watching.

"What did you do to her? If you've hurt her, I'll--"

"She's fine. Just sleeping. Your father is asleep as well and also won’t wake. We have spelled them. The phase of the moon has made the veil thin between this world and our demesnes in Faerie. No human within a mile of this mansion can stay awake. The very air you breathe is tinged with Fae magic."

"ButI'mawake..."

"And at considerable cost to the family. Normally, we don't have to consider humans. The spells required don’t come cheaply. Now, we shall not waste them, shall we? You’ll change into Fae garb so that you may travel comfortably. The rest of the Raidh will wear nothing as I am."

"Well...shouldn't I wear nothing too, then?"

She looks at me curiously and her brows rise.
