CHAPTER SIXTEEN

FABIEN

The hunger drives me to find her. The scent of her body in my home drives me insane with desire, but there's more than that.

I know she's meant to be mine. She's the one the witch called to me. My truest love. The woman I'm destined to be with.

I feel it in my bones.

I’ve always poured my seed into women to no avail. The emptiness that followed was torture to me. And that went on for centuries.

Now that I've found her, I can't possibly let her go.

She's mine.

But where has she gotten off to?

My woman is a secretive one. I don't mind it, though. Let her have her secrets as long as I can keep her for myself.

I feel the vibrations of her voice before I hear her. My tentacles touch the wall and I get the sense of the direction the sound is coming from.

She isn't alone. There's another voice. Olivia? Gabrielle? No, it's a man. Jealousy flares in me as I search. Finally, I realize where she must be. For some reason, my love has hidden herself in her closet.

"I just can't, okay? The operation isn't happening. I need to cut it off."

That's her. But who's she talking to?

"My dear child, nothingis ending. You’ll get the evidence I need, or you’ll end up like your predecessor."

The man sounds older, and his voice is oddly high pitched and saccharine sweet. Like a grandmother offering candy no child wants to eat.

"What? What do you mean?"

"Do you really think Mia Zedona was killed by chance assassination? No, Lily. She balked at being paired with a hideous monster. Had she been more agreeable, like her father and sister, she’d still be alive, and you’d be where I found you: the token woman in an otherwise incompetant circle of men."

"Wait...you had someone kill Mia Zedona because she wouldn't go undercover for you?"

"No," he says, gravely. Then he laughs. "I killed her myself."

"But that’s murder! Even if you got a conviction against Fabien, murder? You have to know you can't get away with it!"

He laughs again, more sinister this time.

"I know nothing of the sort. Ihavegotten away with it. And I will get away with killing you, too, if you fail me."

"I’ll use every connection I have at Homeland Security, and my father's influence to see to it that you see justice, Rasmussen. The biggest criminal here isyou."

The laugh turns into a childish giggle.

"I’m only nominally employed by Homeland Security. My true employer is far more dangerous, but also far more generous. I have nothing to fear from you or your father. My fate, if I should failhim, would be unthinkable. If I succeed, my rewards will be so great, even your father would be nothing but a puppet to me. Even more of a puppet than you are, Lily."

My blood runs cold at what I'm hearing. Who is this man threatening my love? And why does he keep calling her Lily?

Lili was my mother’s name…

It doesn't take me long to figure out the answer.

"You took an oath, when you accepted your position as an agent," the man says. "All agents must. And whatever you may think of me, or the task I have set you, I’d ask you to consider your oath. You swore your loyalty to your country, and to this agency. I'm sure you'll agree your...monstrous husband is a criminal in the eyes of the law. Your oath requires you to stop him, does it not?"
