"Oh? Did you want to talk now?"

Kyran sits and laces his fingers like he's Sigmund Freud, waiting for me to unload. I have to admit, he's right. I need to talk to someone, and Mia -- Lily, damn it! -- isn't an option. She's lied to me! She's betrayed us all. How can I speak to her? And Gabrielle would kill her, just to save me the pain of doing it. My father...I could never confide in him anyways, and definitely not now.

Kyran has been my best friend and second in command for years. He was a blood brother to Jarrad and swore the oath to me the day my brother died.

He's the best I have.

And as I look into his hazel eyes...I'm lucky to have him.

"She lied to me."

Kyran's playful manner drops immediately. He knows from my tone I don't mean she lied about something small. It's something big, life shaking.

Something that could doom us both.

"Oh, boy. I’m sorry to hear that. Is it the kind of lie that's a problem for you, or the kind of lie that's a problem for thefamily?"

"Ah, yes. The big question. The latter kind."

Kyran whistles.

"Well, shit. Fixable?"

"I don't see how."

"Does your dad know?"

"No."

"You're sure?"

My chuckle at his question must seem very out of place. But I’m very sure. If my father knew, Lily would be dead, and I’d be disowned. Safe to say he doesn't know.

"I'm sure."

"And Octavian?"

My lips tighten as I consider. I can't see how Octavian could know. He's not the type to let an advantage go to waste. And this’d be his master stroke. He'd have my head, and he'd be in my place.

There's no way Octavian could keep it together long enough to even savor such a victory. He’d be in my father's rooms now, telling him everything.

"No, he couldn't know."

"Then you work it out. You talk to her and you work it out."

I sigh and slump into the chair across from him.

"You don't know what you're talking about. This is serious."

"Serious? Boss, she's in the garden planting petunias with that cannibal horse woman you all seem to like so much.That'sserious. She could get eaten any second. Meanwhile, you'redenting the decor."

"You're making light of this?"

"I'm not! I swear I'm not. Look, I was around for your mom and dad's marriage andthatwas serious. Royalty from one family and royalty from another? They were ready to kill each other every chance they got."

"One of them succeeded," I say, grimly.

"Truth. But still, they made it work, in their way. These marriages are arranged. They're for power and money and property. You're not supposed to fall in love."
