CHAPTER TWENTY

LILY

Icome out of it slowly. The pain etched across my skin.

Jesus Christ, it feels like I got hit by a milk truck. Why a milk truck? My brain is so fuzzy, it takes a moment for me to remember. Ididtake some hits, but it wasn't from the milkman, that's for sure.

Then it all comes back.

I killed Rasmussen.

And another thought, one I've never thought before…

My family is safe.

Almost. I still have one phone call to make. To my father.

The pain is bone deep, but I'm breathing, so my vest must have held. I twitch my toes and they still move. So my spine held up, too.

It feels like I'm floating. Like I'm...in a cocoon. A warm, moist cocoon flowing around me. In the distance, I hear a heartbeat.

My eyes try to open, but they're crusty. My arm tries to lift to wipe them and there's a lot of resistance.

"Here, let me get that, my love."

A warm tentacle flows across my eyelids, wiping them clean.

I open my eyes and in the darkness, Fabien is all around me, flowing all over me, undulating like a womb.

"You've been baking for a couple of days," he says. "You're almost ready to come out."

"What is this? I mean, I know it'syou, but what...?"

"Healing. Being wrapped and warm helps, but also the fluid I secrete speeds healing. At least, it always did for me. I wasn't sure if it’d work for you, but I refused to lose you, Lily. I’ve surrounded you to rebuild your body and your health. You were badly injured, but now you should be almost fully recovered."

Something stirs between my legs at the thought of his kindness. I've never known what it's like to be loved this way before. So completely and fully.

I wanthim.

But that's nothing new. I've always wanted Fabien. He's literally the man of my dreams.

"Sleep, my love. There’ll be time for that later."

The scarsfrom my bullet wounds have healed to tiny silver dots on my skin.

Flashes of Rasmussen still appear in my dreams, but they vanish almost immediately. They're replaced with the tentacled face of my husband, Fabien. He brings me pina coladas on the beach and sits with me while I read.

"You can't keep doing this," I tell him every night. "If you're in my dreams, you must not be getting rested. Sleep is important, you know."

"I slept enough before I met you," he says. "And I still get some good rest, between these dream vacations and the sex we always have when you wake."

"Always? I think there were a few times when I just went back to sleep, weren't there?"

He brushes his tentacles down my sun-kissed thighs. The tingles roll right up between my legs. The suckers keep doing little soft teases all over me.

"Uh uh. Not one night. Not yet. Maybe tonight, though? We'll just have to see."

He climbs over me, his tentacles bind me with my arms and legs splayed out, leaving my body open for him to do as he pleases. Just the weight of him pressing between my legs makes me shudder. My clit feels like it's swollen and throbbing. I can hardly stand to be touched.
