“I know that’s not the answer you wanted,” Kyle says to his daughter. “And maybe that will be one of our approaches, but like I said, I can’t doanythinguntil I talk to my lawyers and think through all possible ramifications. I’m not saying no to anything, but I also can’t say yes. I don’t want to give you false hope,” he says to me.

“This is so wrong!” Iris cries, pounding her fist on the counter.

Ashton wraps his arms around her from behind and pulls her against his chest. “We’re going to help, okay? We just have to be smart and patient. Your dad is right. There are a lot of hidden variables and unexpected consequences to consider. We also don’t want to make Tristan’s situation worse.”

He kisses her hair, and she seems to relax slightly.

“This sucks,” she mumbles. “I’m sorry,” she says to me.

I manage a quick smile. “It’s fine. Thanks for listening and considering it.”

Kyle places his hand on my shoulder and squeezes. “That much I can promise, son. I will definitelyconsideras many possibilities as I can.”
