My smile grows, and she averts her gaze.

“Hey, sorry about yesterday,” I say. “I shouldn’t have done that. I… never mind. Just, sorry.”

She relaxes slightly. “I guess there’ve been worse offenses in the course of human history than a hot guy showing off his hotness.”

“You think I’m hot?”

“Doesn’t everyone?”

I look away, and the mood settles again. “Anyway, I won’t do it again. I’ll respect your boundaries.”

“And I’ll stop acting like a jerk.”

“Jerk might be a strong word. Accurate, but strong,” I say, cracking another smile.

Her gaze locks on my lips, then drops to my shorts. A slight flush blooms up her neck to her cheeks as I swallow my own wave of arousal. Yeah, I’m not sure who got the worst of that stunt last night. Fifteen minutes in a scalding stream still wasn’t enough to purge the memory of the restrained lust burning in her eyes. Her gaze was as hot as a touch when it ran over my body. Even now I’m a raging inferno of…Don’t go there, Tristan.

Running.

Coffee.

I take a sip of that.

“What are you doing today?” she asks, clearing her throat.

“Going for a run,” I say dryly.

Her eye roll is so freaking adorable. I’m in deep shit if I don’t get on her bad side again. This sudden truce is messing with my head.

“After that, genius,” she says.

I shrug. “Not sure yet. Thought maybe I’d go job hunting again. It wasn’t humiliating enough yesterday.”

She twists a smile. “Want some company?”

“You don’t have to work?”

“No, just Monday through Friday. I work at an engineering firm.”

“Engineering, huh? I knew you’d kick ass one day.”

Her expression clouds over as she shoves her hands in her pockets. “I’m an intern. I’m almost finished with my degree, though.”

“Probably the best damn intern they ever had.”

Her stance softens as she studies me, and I stare at the floor, feeling naked all over again beneath her open appraisal. Why is she acting so weird? Yesterday I thought she was going to rip my head off. Now it’s coffee and hanging out?

Wait.

My heart beats faster.

Oh no. Kim didn’t tell her, did she?!

I try to control my breathing as I read her face, her body language—any clue that she knows.

“Tristan, um…”

No, no, no. This can’t be happening.
