Don’t you dare say it!

“Don’t what? Wait, are you mad? I thought…”

She doesn’t finish, and I back further away, locking my hands on my head.

Heart pounding, I fight my racing thoughts.

She loves me? No. No, no, no.

No!

Lust, fine. Love? Never.

“I should go. I’m so sorry, Iz.”

Her expression guts me as I back toward the door.

“You’resorry? Sorry for what, exactly?”

“Sorry I kissed you, made you think…”

“You didn’t. I kissed you.”

“I shouldn’t have kissed you back.”

“Why?”

“Because you’re with someone.”As if that’s the reason.

“Only because I don’t have a choice.”

She blanches the second it comes out.

I stiffen and drop my hands.

“What do you mean by that?” I ask.

She shakes her head. “Never mind.”

“Not never mind. What do you mean you don’t have a choice? Is Pierce threatening you?”

I take her arm as she tries to escape, and she yanks it away.

“It’s none of your business. You’resorry, remember?”

“Iz…”

“Don’tIzme.” Angry tears shine in her eyes, and my chest feels like it’s caving in. “So, what was this just now? You were fine messing around with me as long as there were no feelings involved, is that it? As long as I’m just a piece of ass you can use and throw away? You must have one big itch to scratch after four fucking years!”

She storms into the hall, and I feel like I’ve been flayed and strung up. Life drains out of me as her words scratch through my head. Her resentment is fair. Her bitterness and anger. I’ve hurt her so many times, of course this one would be brutal after giving her hope. This is exactly why I couldn’t let this happen. Exactly why I fought it the second I realized how dangerously hot our flames still burned for each other. It was a game the first couple of days, deadly since.

I went to prison for a crime I didn’t commit. That doesn’t mean it was a punishment I didn’t deserve.
