“You’re right,” I say. “I’ll talk to my PO about finding a new place to live.”

“Tristan, that’s not—”

I shrug out of her hold and start toward the hall. “It’s fine. I get it. You’re right. It’s better if I’m not here.”

It’s better if I’m nowhere.

“You need to stop shaving with a cheese grater,” Leah says as I clock in for my shift.

She brushes her cheek in the same place as my scrape, and I toss her a smile.

“Couldn’t find my razor today, sorry. Seemed like a good idea at the time.”

She smirks. “You okay? Looks fresh.”

“Yeah, just fell on my run this morning.” I hold up my palms to show her the scratches there as well.

“Is that also what happened to your eye yesterday? You might want to pick a new hobby. You’re not very good at it.”

I huff a laugh. “Sure. Any suggestions?”

“Chess?”

“How doeschessfit your dangerous felon narrative?”

“Hmm. Good point.” She taps her chin. “Ant farming.”

“What?” I cough out. “Ant farming?”

She shrugs. “Sure, I mean, all the tunneling and crap? What’s moredangerous felonthan tunneling?”

“Good point. I’ll look into it.”

She grins. “I’ve heard ants make great pets.”

“That can’t be true.”

“Just telling you what I’ve heard.”

“Heard from whom? Who do you know that has pet ants?”

“I didn’t say Iknowsomeone, just that I’ve heard it. I don’t remember where. Makes sense, though, right? They’d be easy to feed.”

I let out a snort. “Is ‘ease of feeding’ your only criterion for a good pet?”

“Not the only one. Just trying to think of things that would appeal to dangerous felons.”

Laughing again, I leave her to start my shift.

Under normal circumstances, I’d still be training for at least a few more days, but Stacie is short-staffed today and asked if I could try it on my own. After following Mandie around for six hours yesterday, I’m definitely willing to give it a shot.

The first couple of hours go okay for the most part. I had to ask about a few special menu items, where to find some utensils and condiments, and what to do about a woman who insisted on paying by check, but other than that, there were no earth-shattering events.

Until now.

“No,” the woman says when I approach her table.

“Hi. I’m Tristan. Can I start you off—”
