“Really? I could have sworn it was you,” Pierce says. “There was even that fight, no?” He motions toward the bruisehecaused on Tristan’s face.

“You were in a fight?” Brian asks.

“No! None of this is true,” Tristan repeats.

“So how did you get that?” Brian asks.

“I…”

He looks so helpless as he searches for a response, and now I want to throw punches as well. None of this is fair, and I have no idea how to fix it. Whatever I do will just trigger Pierce and make it worse. I ball my fingers into fists and shove them in my coat pockets.

“Plus, you downed a whole six-pack when I was here the other night, so I just assumed it was fine for you to drink like the old days,” Pierce says.

“Fucking liar,” Tristan says. “He hates me,” he tells Brian in an urgent tone. “He’s trying to set me up.”

“Hate you? I don’t even know you. I guess it could have been non-alcoholic beer,” he directs at Brian. “I didn’t look closely.”

Brian glances between Pierce’s fake innocence and Tristan’s icy scowl. After several seconds, he sighs.

“Okay, well, we can clear this up real quick.”

He reaches into his bag and pulls out a small plastic cup.

“You have to be kidding me,” Tristan cries, throwing up his hands.

I feel sick as Brian moves toward the hallway and motions to Tristan.

“Let’s go. You know the drill,” he says, handing him the cup.

“This is bullshit!” Tristan says.

“Watch it,” Brian warns.

Tristan swipes the cup from his hand, blasting a murderous look at Pierce.

Brian follows him into the bathroom, and I could scream at the injustice of it all. Any goodwill I had toward Pierce has vaporized into resentment. I will never forgive him for this.

“What are you doing?” I hiss at him.

“Just making sure our streets are safe for the kids,” he returns with a glib look.

I shake my head in disbelief, having no idea what to say. Kim is fuming, and I just know fireworks are about to go off in the next few minutes.

“You’re a fucking asshole,” she growls, pointing at him. “He’s donenothingto you. He hasn’t hurt anyone. Why can’t you just leave him alone?!”

“Well, no one except the girl he killed, right?” he says before his gaze goes cold. “You want to know what my problem is? How about the fact that your waste-of-space brother is trying to steal my girlfriend? He’s had his sick mind fixated on her since the second he moved in. I have a right to defend what’s mine.”

“I’m notyours,” I snap. “I don’tbelongto anyone. This is over, Pierce. You just ruined any chance you had at getting back together.”

“Back together? We’re not even broken up, princess,” he hisses.

“Hell yes, we are,” I fire back.

He releases a bitter laugh. “Are you sure that’s how you want to play it? Trust me, making your boyfriend pee in a cup is nothing compared to what I can do.”

“Bring it,” Kim seethes out. “We’re not afraid.” But any response is cut off when the men return from the bathroom.

My heart is beating wildly as I try to read their expressions. Tristan looks furious, not scared, so hopefully that means he passed his drug test. No surprise there. I know what he’s been doing every night this week and none of it involved banned substances.
