“They’re under stress with fixing their house. Tatum’s little sister has stars in her eyes,” I rambled on as I quickly came up with an excuse. “You know the kind…almost on the cusp of womanhood and hunting for a husband. She’s looking to fall in love. He’s too handsome (gag!) and charming for his own good (oh, please). The moment she sees him, she’ll fall for him and then I’ll have a problem on my hands. Things will get complicated, and I don’t need any drama.”

I gulped in a deep breath of air and continued, “Plus, he’s abrasive, what with his resentment about Simu. You do want me to resolve our differences and start negotiations again, don’t you?”

“Hmm…his presence could go either way. It could give them the shove they need,” he mused.

Panic gripped me by the throat. I needed more time to figure out my next move, and I definitely didn’t need Grigore sniffing around, throwing a wrench in my plans.

“I’m the one on the ground, Tata. Let me call the shots,” I pleaded.

Another pause. He was thinking, rolling every option around in his head. My heart was breaking. I thought I could change my father’s mind, but that wasn’t going to happen. My head swam in a sea of confusion and turmoil, but I didn’t want Grigore anywhere near me. I needed time to think, time to talk to Tatum, time to figure out a solution.

“Very well, Daughter,” he finally conceded.

Closing my eyes, I let out a soft breath of relief.

“Thank you,” I whispered.

Disaster averted. For now.
