For some reason, that makes me blush. “Thanks.”

Keeping a hold of one of my hands, Lilly tugs me over to the table.

“Cash and I were gonna wait to stop by, but we were already in the neighborhood. I was just telling Ashlyn, she needs to bring you by for one of our family dinners.”

“And I was just telling Mom that it might be too much for you,” Ashlyn interjects, her lips twitching.

“Oh no, I would love to come.”

Ashlyn’s eyes shine with mirth. “You have no idea what you’re in for. We have a very big family. And we can be a bit rambunctious when we’re all together.”

“The more the merrier.” I grin.

Ashlyn laughs. “You asked for it.”

“It’s settled then.” Lilly slaps the table and gets up. “We’ll plan it for next weekend. I’ll let everyone know.”

She bends down and palms Destiny’s cheeks, squishing them together and giving her a kiss.

“I’m gonna go grab my husband and get out of here. He promised he’d take me out for dinner tonight.”

Ashlyn and I get up from the table to follow her to the front door. Lilly turns and faces me before she walks out.

“Ashlyn didn’t give me the details. She only told me you’re being treated for an illness. Whatever it is, I’ll pray it works out for you. And please let us know if you aren’t feeling up to coming next weekend. We can do it any time.”

My eyes water. Without thinking about it, I hug the kind woman. “Thank you,” I say against her ear. Her smile is sweet when we pull apart.

After giving her daughter a hug, she breezes through the door, and we follow behind. Destiny runs past us and launches into her grandfather’s arms. He scoops her up and bear hugs her, causing her to squeal and giggle.

Watching Ashlyn and Destiny with their family makes me miss mine even more.

Dillon walks up next to me. “Did I hear you agreed to attend a family dinner?” he asks in a low voice as he too watches Ashlyn, Destiny, and Ashlyn’s parents.

“Yeah.”

I glance over when he chuckles. “You’re in for a big treat.”
