Reluctantly, I pull back after a long, lingering kiss.

“We need to get going,” I tell Trent.

His hands run over my thighs underneath my dress, stopping a hairsbreadth away from the junction of my thighs. “Where are we going exactly?”

“Ashlyn’s parents’ house. Her mom put together a family bar-b-que in my honor.”

“Are you sure you should be out and about like that?”

I press a soft kiss against his lips before getting up from his lap. “Yes, I’m sure.”

With a sigh, he gets to his feet. “Fine.”

I grab his hand to lead him out of the room, but I’m pulled back until my front meets his and his arms go back around my waist. He stares down at me.

“How are you feeling?” His voice is quiet and his brows pinch in concern.

“It hasn’t gotten bad yet. My appetite is crap so I can’t eat much, and I’ve been more tired lately. Other than that, I’m fine.”

His eyes leave my face and slide over my shoulders and chest. “You’ve lost too much weight.”

“I plan to talk to the doctor about it on Monday. He said if the nausea became too much of a problem there are medications that can help.”

Trent still looks worried, but he nods anyway.

We walk back out into the living, and I’m surprised to see Ashlyn, Dillon, and Destiny sitting on the couch waiting for us. There’s a cartoon on the TV keeping Destiny occupied.

I lead Trent over to them as Ashlyn and Dillon get up.

“You guys didn’t have to wait for us.”

Ashlyn smiles. “It’s no problem.”

Trent holds his hand out to Dillon.

“Sorry about earlier.”

Dillon releases Trent’s hand and snakes his arm around Ashlyn’s shoulders. “No problem. I would have reacted the same way.”

“Would your parents mind if I bring Trent with us?”

“Absolutely not. The more the merrier.”

Trent looks down when Destiny walks up to him. “Hey, there.”

“What’s your name?” she asks, doing her curious head tilt thing.

Trent smiles at the little girl. “Trent. And what’s yours?”

“Destiny.” Her eyes move to me before she looks back at Trent. “Are you Ally’s friend?”

“I’m her husband.”

With a shrug, she says, “Okay.” She faces her parents. “Can we go to Grandma and Grandpa’s now?”

We all laugh.

“We sure can,” Ashlyn answers. “Why don’t you go grab the container from the fridge? Not sure Grandma would forgive me if I forgot the banana pudding.”

She skips off to do her mother’s request.

A few minutes later, we leave the house, Ashlyn, Dillon, and Destiny going to their car, and Trent and I heading toward Trent’s truck.

As we navigate the roads to Ashlyn’s parents’ house, the weight that’s been nearly choking me the last couple of weeks disappears. A small smile curves my lips. Sometimes having a stubborn and protective husband pays off.
