“Is that my Destiny!”

Destiny drops her mother’s hand and runs behind the counter, heading straight for Ellie, who’s quickly making her way toward us. Destiny launches herself at her aunt, who snatches her up for a tight hug.

“From the looks of it, you would think they haven’t seen each other in weeks, when it was just two days ago,” Ashlyn says dryly as she looks at her daughter being swallowed in Ellie’s arms.

I laugh, loving the adoration the two have for each other. Ashlyn’s family is as close to each other as Trent and I are to ours.

Ellie sets Destiny on her feet, and they walk over to us.

“Ally, it’s good to see you again,” Ellie says, her eyes crinkling at the corners with her smile. “What are you two doing here? You don’t have an appointment I don’t know about, do you, Ashlyn?”

“Not this week, but I do next week. We were hoping you could fit Ally in.”

I startle at being put on the spot. It was my idea to come here, sure, but with how busy they are, I had figured I’d have to make an appointment and come back.

“That’s okay. I can see how busy you are.” I look around the congested room. “I’ll just take your next appointment. Whenever is fine.”

“Nonsense.” Ellie waves away my suggestion. “I actually had someone cancel on me, so I’m yours for the next hour. “

Disheartened, I don’t tell her what I want won’t take an hour.

As she leads the way to the only chair available, we pass by Kim, who’s busy highlighting an older woman’s hair. She uses the tip of the bleach brush and points it at Destiny. “I’m coming for some loving as soon as I set Mrs. Lucy’s hair.”

“Okay,” Destiny chirps.

After I take a seat, Ellie whips a pink cape over my shoulders and secures it around my neck. She begins fluffing my dull hair. “So, what are we doing today?”

I meet her eyes in the mirror and steal myself for my request. This will be the third time my illness has taken my hair, and just like last time, I’m taking control.

“Shave it all off.”
