He grunts again.

“I’m not sure how late we’ll be, so don’t wait up. Terry’s throwing an after party and I wanted to stop by for a bit.”

“Curfew is midnight, remember?” Andrew reminds Ally.

Her eyes narrow. “And you remember you said you would drop my curfew for prom.”

“I changed my mind.”

“I don’t think so.” She steps back and props her hands on her hips. Her expression drips with attitude. “I’ll be with Trent, so you know I’ll be safe.”

His eyes slide to me, and he grates, “She better be safe.”

“You know I’d never let anything happen to her.”

He takes a moment, contemplating my statement, before he gives me a stiff nod. He knows I’d cut off my own arm before I let anything happen to her. I don’t miss the silent warning in his gaze telling me I better not touch a hair on her head inappropriately.

“Are we allowed to leave now?” Ally asks impatiently.

“Not until after I take some pictures.”

Andrew watches me like a hawk as Ally moves closer to me. Refusing to give up the opportunity to capture this moment with her, I wrap my arm around her waist. I keep my hold loose, so I don’t piss Andrew off more than he already is. I can see it in his irritated expression he’d rather the picture just be of Ally, but he can screw off. This is Ally’s night, and if she wants me in the pictures, I’ll damn well be in them.

“Now can we go?” Ally asks, not stepping away from me once the pictures are taken.

“Fine. Yes. Go.”

After Ally kisses each Andrew and Jase on the cheek, we leave. I blow out a rush of air once we’re outside. I already have a hard enough time hiding my feelings for Ally from her. It’s stressful as hell hiding them from Andrew and Jase as well. I’m not sure how much longer I can keep up the façade.

I hold open the car door for Ally and help get her dress situated before walking to my side. Once I’m inside, I reach to the back seat and grab the little plastic container. I hold it out for her.

Her surprised eyes jump to me before looking down at the corsage.

“Wow, Trent. This is gorgeous. Thank you.”

She takes the silvery lavender flower out of the plastic container and runs a finger over the smooth, delicate petals. She holds it out to me, along with her hand. “Will you put it on me?”

“Of course.”

As I slide the corsage over her wrist, the irony of our situation doesn’t go unnoticed. Typically, couples who attend dances are in a relationship. While Ally and I may be best friends, we definitely aren’t a couple. My feelings for her are strong, and I’d have already snatched her up if there weren’t four years separating us.

“I got you a boutonniere.”

Reaching in her purse, she pulls out a small container. I laugh when I realize she got me the same flower, only smaller. She smiles as she pins it to the lapel of my jacket.

“You look so handsome in your suit.”

“Thanks,” I grunt. “You look….” I pause. “There are no words to describe how beautiful you are.”

She blushes and a cute smile curves her lips. “Thank you.”

I hold my breath and grit my teeth when she leans over the console and settles her lips softly against my cheek. Closing my eyes, I pray for strength. When she pulls back, she only does so enough that she can see my face, which leaves her lips entirely way too close to mine. I want so badly to pull her closer and kiss those pretty lips.

Something flashes in her eyes that knocks me on my ass. Curiosity and want. I’ve seen the look a few times, and each time I do, it weakens my resolve.

A few weeks ago, when Ally asked me to take her to prom, she said she couldn’t think of a more perfect person to take her. There was no way I could deny her, despite knowing it was wrong. She should have asked a guy her age. Prom is a rite of passage. It’s almost traditional for the night to end in bed, or at the very least making out in the back seat of someone’s car. It was that thought that had me saying yes. A murderous rage boils my blood at the thought of Ally in the back seat of some guy’s car with his hands and mouth on her. There’s not a chance in hell I would let that happen.

I clear my throat and face forward in my seat. “You ready to go?”
