Page 55 of Until Never

We’ve kept it hidden from our family and friends, despite their suspicions. Now that she’s eighteen, we no longer have to.

“You’re still too old for her.” He sits back and stubbornly crosses his massive arms over his chest. “She’s barely had time to live. What makes you think she’s going to want you in five years? Or not resent you because she wasn’t able to date and party like a girl her age should?”

I open my mouth to respond, but Ally beats me to it.

“Because I’m never going to want anything more than I want Trent.” She leans into the table again, her eyes pleading with Andrew to understand. “I love Trent, Andrew. It feels like I’ve loved him my whole life. He makes me happy.” More tears gather in her eyes, and I reach over and pick up her hand. She looks at me briefly, giving me her soft smile, before she turns back to Andrew. “I’ve had plenty of opportunities to date other guys, but none of them interested me. Not even a little. Trent is the person I’m supposed to be with. I feel that deep down inside here.” She presses her other hand over her heart.

Some of the anger leaves Andrew’s face as he listens to Ally. She lets my hand go to reach across the table. Andrew’s forced to drop his arms from his chest to grab her hand.

“Would you rather I be with someone who may end up being a jerk?”

“No,” Andrew grunts reluctantly.

“You know Trent, Dad.” She pulls out the big guns by calling him Dad. “You know he’s a good guy and a gentleman. You’ve seen him and me together. Has he ever treated me with anything other than respect?”

“No,” he says, his voice still laced with doubt.

A small smile plays on Ally’s face. “Can you honestly think of anyone better for me than Trent? Besides his age, which is no longer an issue, name me one guy you’d rather see me with?”

The scowl he shoots at Ally has her laughing, and it has the same effect it has on most people who witness it. Andrew’s scowl slides away and he smiles back at her.

He looks at me and his expression turns stern once more. “You hurt her in any way, I’m coming after your ass.”

“If I hurt her, you can do whatever you want to me, but I’m giving you my word, it won’t happen.”

After a moment, he gives me a tight nod.

“Thank fuck that’s over,” Jase grumbles.

“You aren’t worried about Ally being with Trent?” Andrew asks him.

“Hell no. He knows we’d both kick his ass if he screwed her over. Besides, if you’d actually watch the two of them together you’d see how much they love each other.” Jase looks at me, but his words are for Andrew. “Trent’s loved our Ally from the beginning, and she’s loved him just as long. I’ve never met two people who belong together more.”

“I don’t know about that.” Andrew grabs the front of Jase’s shirt and drags him closer so he can plant a kiss on his mouth.

Ally groans and drops her head back. My lips twitch, and I turn my own eyes away from them.

Crisis diverted. Thank fuck.
