“Should I go warn the little twerp away before I’m forced to hold you back?”

My lips twitch when he shoots me a glare out the corner of his eye. “You laugh now, but I’ll be the one laughing when it’s you in my shoes.”

I grunt, both looking forward to and dreading that day.

When the corner of his mouth twitches and he gives me a sly look before pointing his eyes back toward the flamingos, I turn my head to see what has his attention. My jaw clenches and my hands ball into fists at my sides.

“Glad to see I’m not the only one fighting back the urge to deck someone.”

I ignore Dillon’s statement, too focused on the man standing next to Ally. The bastard is courting a death wish with how close he is to her. The little boy, who I would guess is his son, walks over to him and starts yanking on his pants leg to get his attention, but the guy is too focused on my wife to notice.

Ally smiles at the man, but I can tell it’s not one of her real ones because it doesn’t reach her eyes. She’s just being nice, which may very well save the guy’s life.

When he takes a step closer to her, I’ve seen enough. Dillon chuckles behind me as I stalk away, taking long strides until I reach Ally’s side. I slide my arm around Ally’s waist possessively and face the man, showing him with my expression he’s talking to the wrong woman.

“Hey, honey.” She smiles up at me and it’s one of her real ones. “I was wondering where you got off to.”

I look down at her and drop a kiss on her lips. “Dillon and I were looking at the menu at one of the food stands for lunch. You ready to eat?”

I sense the guy in front of us shifting backward on his feet.

That’s right, fucker. Get lost.

“Yeah. I’m starving.”

Remembering the guy, Ally looks back, only to see him walking away. He grips the boy’s hand and is practically dragging him behind him. I kinda feel sorry for the little guy, but I’m too relieved to have his father away from Ally.

Dillon comes up to Ashlyn, who’s holding Destiny so she can see when a couple of bigger kids get in front of her. A few minutes later, we leave the flamingoes and go to the food stand. The women look over the menu and tell me and Dillon what they want before walking off with Destiny to find us a table. It takes another fifteen minutes before we’re walking away with trays loaded down with food and drinks.

“Mama, can we go on the train next?” Destiny asks once she finishes her corndog.

“We’ll see, sweetie.”

It’s been a long day for Ally, so when I see the fatigue on her face, I tell the group, “I hate to cut it short, but I’m going to get Ally home.”

Ashlyn looks at Ally, worry lines appearing on her face. “Are you okay?”

Ally smiles. “Yeah, just a bit tired.”

“We shouldn’t have kept you out so long.”

“What? No way. I had a blast today.” She ruffles Destiny’s hair. “I love hanging out with this princess.”

Destiny smiles and hops down from her seat. “I’m glad you came.” She throws her arms around Ally’s neck and hugs her tight. “Love you, Aunt Ally,” she says quietly.

Ashlyn made a joke the other day saying that Ally was her new aunt and I, her uncle. It kinda stuck and Destiny’s been calling us aunt and uncle ever since.

“I love you too, sweetie,” Ally responds in a choked voice.

When she lets Ally go and flops back down on her seat, Ally watches the little girl with tears in her eyes. In the weeks we’ve been here, Ally and Destiny have gotten close. Even I have to admit it’s going to be hard leaving when it’s time to go.

A few minutes later, we wave goodbye to the trio and make our way toward the exit. The more steps we take, the more Ally allows her weight to fall on me. When she stumbles, I scoop her up into my arms and she lays her head on my chest.

“I feel like you’re always carrying me,” she mumbles into my neck.

I keep my steps light, so I don’t jostle her too much. “Are you complaining?” I arch a brow down at her.

She smiles softly. “No. I feel protected when you carry me, but I hate that you have to.”
