“Don’t get your hopes up. Things still may not work out,” I tell her gently.

She’s already shaking her head before I finish talking. “It will. I know it will.” She rolls to her toes and presses a light kiss against my lips before falling back to her feet. “Erica was meant to be ours, Trent.”

As I stare down at her, seeing the happiness and light in her eyes, I pray she’s right. Not only because Erica deserves a family who will care for her, but because we’ll both be devastated if we aren’t able to adopt her. The thought has crossed my mind that adopting Erica wouldn’t be the same as having a child made of our own flesh and blood, but I know deep in my heart that Erica will be just as much loved as a child Ally and I created together.

I smile and give her a kiss before I take her hand and lead her around the block toward my truck. After I help her inside, I walk around and get behind the wheel. I start the engine and turn to look at her.

“Home? Or is there anywhere else you want to go?” I ask, my lips twitching because I already know her answer.

“You really have to ask?”

Chuckling, I put the truck in Drive and pull away from the curb. “What are you gonna do when we go back home?”

“Send corporate a letter explaining why it would be beneficial they put a Krystal’s in northern Ohio.”

I laugh and shake my head. “I don’t think that’s going to work.”

“Fine.” She huffs and crosses her arms over her chest. “I’ll just send you down here to get me a sack.”

I grunt, pulling to a stop at a red light.

Ally may have been joking, but the thing is, I love the woman so much I would drive a sixteen-hour-roundtrip just to see a smile on her face.
