Ally

When the door behind us opens, Trent and I turn around. The look on Dr. Fowler’s face as he walks in the room and closes the door behind him tells us all we need to know. The weight that’s been sitting on my shoulders for months slides off. Beside me, Trent’s body relaxes too.

“Good news, Ally,” Dr. Fowler says, coming to a stop in front of us. “Your numbers look excellent. So good that if I didn’t know any better, I’d say you’ve never had leukemia a day in your life.”

A startled Dr. Fowler laughs when I launch myself into his arms. Trent chuckles as my doctor awkwardly pats my back. I pull away and beam a big smile at him.

Although we’ve been told numerous times my chances of remission were very high, it’s still a huge relief to have it confirmed.

“Thank you so much, Dr. Fowler,” I tell him. I reach out and grab Trent’s hand. “There’s no way Trent and I could ever thank you for all that you’ve done for us.”

“No thanks are necessary. Seeing that smile on your face is gratitude enough.”

“So, what’s next?” Trent asks, getting to the bare bones of my situation.

“From what I understand, you two will be staying in the Nashville area for a while longer, correct?”

Trent and I briefly explained our desire to stay close to Erica until we find out if we can adopt her.

“Yes.”

He nods. “I recommend having blood work done once a month for the first six months. After that, every six months. Since you’ll be staying here for the time being, my office can take care of it. Once you go back home, I’ll release you to Dr. Warren.”

I nod.

“How have you been feeling since chemo is over and you’re off the meds, Ally?”

“Really good, actually. I’m still tired a lot, but it’s not a draining tired. And my appetite has come back tenfold. I’ve eaten more in the last week than I think I have since this started.”

“That’s good. I want you to continue to take it easy and not overextend yourself. You’re still recovering, and it’ll take some time.”

“I’ll make sure she doesn’t do anything she’s not supposed to,” Trent says, tossing me a wink.

I roll my eyes and a small snort leaves me. If it were up to Trent, I’d stay in bed all day while he catered to my every whim. The man won’t even let me carry a laundry basket filled with clothes. Most women would take advantage of their husband wanting to do everything for them, but I’m on the edge of going bonkers with boredom.

“I want you to continue to take the vitamins I prescribed you. It never hurts to give your body a little boost.”

“Will do.”

“And if either of you have any concerns, please don’t hesitate to call the office. I’ll be in touch with Dr. Warren to send over your records when the time comes for you to leave. He’ll keep me apprised of the situation.”

“Thank you again.”

“I know this is a touchy subject, but I wanted to give you both my condolences as well.”

A twinge of pain pinches my chest. “Thank you.”

Each day gets a tiny bit easier, but I know the pain of losing our baby will never fully go away.

Walking out of Dr. Fowler’s office, I let out a deep breath and pull in a lungful of fresh air. My grin is so big my cheeks hurt when I turn to face Trent. His smile is just as happy as mine.

With an excited shout, I throw my arms around his shoulders and jump so my legs wrap around his waist. His hands land on my butt to catch me. A couple of people on the sidewalk laugh at my behavior, but I ignore them as I look down at Trent.

“I love you,” he says, staring up at me.

I drop my head for a quick kiss. “I love you too.”
