“Are you sure?” I ask.
“Absolutely. Erica is our daughter now. I’ll do whatever is necessary to help her.”
“I love you.” I lean over and give him a kiss. “I want to call Andrew and Jase too. I hate to ask this of them, but I want as many options as we can get. I’d offer my own—”
I’m cut short. “No, you won’t.”
I squeeze his hand. “Calm down. I know I can’t donate. I just wish I could.”
“When we leave here, we’ll call Andrew and Jase. You know they’ll offer to be tested.”
“I know.”
“Erica’s doctor wants to admit her to monitor her. I was going to take her this morning, but I got the call from the adoption agency. I wanted to leave it up to you if you wanted to take her.”
“She doesn’t know yet?”
“No. I was waiting to talk to you first.”
“We’ll take her,” Trent tells Kate.
“After I got the phone call this morning, I packed her a small bag. Don’t worry about her other things. I’ll get them together, and once things are settled and you can take her home, I’ll have everything else ready.”
The three of us get to our feet. Now that we know what’s happening with Erica, we’re anxious to do what needs to be done to help her.
I hug Kate.
“Thank you so much for caring for Erica. I know it can’t be easy on you, doing what you do.”
“I’m just glad she’s getting the family she deserves. I love all these kids, but Erica is special. She’s fought so hard in life. It’s time she’s had more people at her back who care for her.”
We spend the next few minutes going over Erica’s routine and everything we need to know about her leukemia. The folder Mr. Tanner gave us has Erica’s medical records, but I’d still like to hear it from Kate, since she’s with her every day.
After, we explain to Erica what’s going on and that we’re taking her to the hospital. As Trent helps her into the back seat of his car, I stand back and watch. I clasp my hands together in front of me and send up a silent prayer to whatever being will listen, begging the higher power to grant the doctors the ability to help save our little girl.
