“I’ll ask her. She’s asleep. Last I checked she looked too peaceful to wake. Probably needs the rest. She’s got dark circles under her eyes, and it’s been an eventful morning. She’s only been asleep an hour.” Then I thought of something. “Hang on a second.” On a hunch, I went to her room and found her backpack. A quick inspection, and I found a folder with a bunch of papers in it. “OK, yeah. Found at least some things for you, including the name of the facility and her doctor. No disks or images, but there’s X-ray reports.”

“Great. I’ll see if I can pull some strings -- or get someone to hack into the hospital’s system -- to get whatever Doc wants. Giovanni can do some digging. In the meantime, if she needs something for pain, let me know. If she doesn’t mind, I’d like to do an exam. See if the tumor has any obvious growth since her last physical exam.”

“I’ll have her come down after she wakes.”

“She eating much?”

“Not sure. She didn’t eat much breakfast, but didn’t complain about being sick or anything. But I’ve only been with her a few hours. I have no idea of her habits or overall general health.”

“Bring her down when she wakes. If she’s willing. If nothing else, I can get her some supplements that will help build her up.”

“Fury.” Rycks entered the clinic, nodding at me. “Doc is out of town. Said he’d be back in two days. He wanted you to work with Blade and go through any records we can get on Swan. See if anything jumps out at you.”

“Make sure Giovanni gets us her imaging. Me and Blade might not be able to make much sense of it, but when Doc gets back, he’ll need it. Did he mention anything else he wants before he gets back?”

“No. Said she’d waited this long. She could wait a couple more days. He didn’t want to jump into it before he reviewed everything.”

“Sounds like a plan,” I said. “We’ve got things to do tomorrow so anything you do will need to be this afternoon. I won’t have her stressed at all tomorrow.”

Fury raised an eyebrow. “So it’s like that, huh?”

“If by ‘like that’ you mean she’s mine, then yes. She’s mine. Spread the word, because there absolutely will be no misunderstandings. I’d hate to have to kill some son of a bitch for hittin’ on her. But I will.”

Rycks and Fury both chuckled. “Welcome to the club, brother,” Rycks said. “We all check our man cards in our woman’s panty drawer before meetings.”

I couldn’t help but bark out a laugh. “Yeah. I get you.” Shaking my head, I tried to absorb the meaning of everything I was doing. I was committing my life to this girl. And I knew it was the rest of my life. “I’ve known her hours, man. Hours. Yet, she’s gonna be with me the rest of my life. No matter how long she lives.”

Fury gripped my shoulder. “One day at a time, brother. Don’t give up on her until Doc’s had a chance to look at her. And whatever you do, don’t let her go. Any woman who can make you feel like this deserves your whole heart. No matter how short a time she’s in your life.”
