Austin sat down, feeling his stomach tighten again.

“Jane said that when she asked me, I said nothing,” Austin answered, looking at his mom.

“You said nothing? Nothing at all to this poor girl who mustered up the courage to ask you out?” she asked.

“I know, Mom,” Austin said, shaking his head. “I told you I was a dick, even though I don’t remember. All I can say is, that she wasn’t my type. She wasn’t the kind of girl I dated, and Tim was behind it. He did it so often that I didn’t know how to deal with it, so not saying anything to the girls was the easiest thing to do.”

His mom just shook her head.

“But the point is I feel badly because I told her last night that I didn’t remember her, or this incident even happening…”

“Well that breaks my heart,” his mother responded. “This poor thing asked you out, and you completely dismissed her. Not to mention, you didn’t even remember what she looked like. Austin, come on… that’s terrible. I hope you plan to say something—Jane deserves an apology.”
