“So what’s new with the case?” she asked.

Cam scowled. “The del Fuego family isn’t cooperating with the police.”

“No surprise there,” Maria said.

“No, but because both women were members of the crime family, whether they were involved in the business or not, the police are already calling it a cartel hit, and writing Teag off as a case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time.”

“That feels shitty.”

“It does,” Cam agreed.

“Teag’s still a potential witness.”

“He is, and they’ll want to talk to him when he wakes up. A description of the killer might help identify him to the cops, but it might not. Bottom line though, they don’t have a clue about the assassin’s identity, and the del Fuegos, who might, aren’t talking.”

“What do you think the chances are that this guy will come back for Teag?”

“I don’t know, but we have to assume he will.”

“Agreed. I have a couple hours before I’m due at the hospital. What do you want me to focus on today?”

As soon as she posed the question to Cam, her phone buzzed with an incoming text. A shot of dread hit, and her stomach dropped, but when she read the message, relief followed.

“He’s awake,” Maria said, blinking back the unwelcome sting of tears.

Cam’s entire demeanor shifted. Maria hadn’t realized how much stress he’d been holding in his body until his shoulders relaxed. He closed his eyes and let out a long exhale.

“Thank fuck. I’ll drive. You call Jake on the way.”
