“I need to talk to her,” he said.

Catching the tone of his voice, her smile faded. “I can text her.”

“Please.”

“You remember what happened, don’t you?” she asked gently.

Teag squeezed his eyes shut against the images that now played over in his mind like a video loop stuck on repeat. “Yeah, I remember.”

Within an hour, not only were Maria and Cam Taylor hovering around his bed, but also two Miami police detectives.

Maria leaned close and spoke to him softly. “We’ve kept them away as long as we could, but they need info for their investigation. Are you up for this? Because if you’re not, we’ll send them packing for a while longer.”

A small piece of him warmed at how protective Maria seemed, and truthfully, he’d rather stick pins in his eyes than talk about what happened that night, but it wasn’t going to be any easier tomorrow or the next day or the day after that. “I want to get this over with,” he said.

Maria stepped back and Detective Lane introduced himself and his partner, Detective Kelly. Lane looked rumpled, wearing a white button-down rolled at the sleeves, and a pair of wrinkled khakis. His partner, a twentysomething woman, with alert, dark eyes, and a no-nonsense ponytail, appeared a bit fresher. Both wore a similar expression, though, one Teag interpreted as jaded.

“Mr. Tate, let’s start with how you met Cristina and Renata del Fuego.”

Teag gripped the sheets, gazed out the window behind the detectives, and started talking.
