“Let’s hear it,” she said, hand on hip.

“The band’s heading out on tour for July and August. We’re providing the additional security.”

Some of the guys she’d first worked with at TSI had taken on full-time duties as Fiona’s personal bodyguards. Fiona’s husband Jake, also a TSI employee, insisted she have that kind of security. Not only was Fiona the lead singer and face of the band, but she’d been captured and tormented by a crazed serial killer. The level of fame that came along with her massive musical success, and from her very public personal trauma, required an elevated level of protection.

The bad shit had gone down before Maria started at TSI, but she’d heard about it, even before she met Fiona in person. The petite singer was tougher than she looked.

“That’s not so bad, boss. I like their music,” Maria said. She really liked the band members too, all except for the cocky drummer. Guys like Teagan Tate, who stuck their dick in anything that moved, pissed Maria off.

Okay, so she could admit he was massively talented and had the body of a Greek god, and a sexy Aussie accent that seemed to cause women’s clothes to fall right off. Didn’t matter, though. He was a man-whore who didn’t take anything seriously.

“They’re doing an abbreviated tour. Eight weeks. Fiona doesn’t want to be away from home any longer. Jake’s gonna be there for the first week, along with Violet and her babysitter. He’s supposed to be on vacation, but you know he won’t be able to keep his fingers out of the security cookie jar.” Cam shook his head, and Maria laughed.

“But he’s run their security detail on previous tours, so he’ll be good to have around as you guys get into a routine,” Cam continued. “You’ll coordinate with Fiona’s personal protection. We trained them, so they’ll be easy to work with. Your team’s focus will mostly be on the other band members, and on coordinating with the security at the venues and hotels.”

“Anyone having rabid fan troubles? Other issues we should be aware of?”

“The usual creepy fan mail, but nothing these guys haven’t seen before. You’ll run point on the op once Jake heads home.”

“Yes, sir,” Maria said, the formal response out of her mouth before she caught herself.

Cam quirked an eyebrow. “Old habits die hard, huh?”

“Guess so,” she answered.

“You miss it?”

“Sometimes. I like my paycheck better here though,” she joked. “How about you?”

“Every day. But I’d seen enough. Done enough. It was taking a toll.”

A little surprised by Cam’s honesty, Maria felt compelled to be just as candid. “Same. My last deployment fucked with my head a little. Made me think about a different kind of life.”

“I get it,” Cam said. Then, as if he realized he was having a cozy heart-to-heart with one of his employees, his expression blanked.

“Okay, well, I’m gonna head home to unpack, and then call your wife about a drinking date.”

“Good work with the last shithead client, by the way,” Cam said, as Maria backed her way out of the office.

“Thanks, boss. You. Kid duty. This week.”

“On it,” Cam grumbled.
