Page 32 of Not Kissing Nick

Nick had no reason to keep him.

Except…his mom had said it before. Nova’s dad had wanted kids. With her. Said he’d loved kids.

That had made her mad. She’d said, if she’d kept him around, he’d have wanted more kids and she definitely didn’t.

Noah wasn’t stupid.

He’d bet that was why she’d kept Nova a secret, if Nick was telling the truth.

Just so Nick wouldn’t get Nova. If he liked kids so much, he couldn’t have his own. His mom could be mean like that when she was mad at someone. Sometimes.

Sometimes she’d hug him and tell him she loved him lots. Him, mostly. She almost always had seemed mad at Nova, though. Sometimes for stuff that Nova hadn’t even done.

That hadn’t been fair to his little sister.

Noah didn’t know how he was supposed to feel right now. He missed his mom, but he was really mad at her, too. He had been for a really long time.

Not that it mattered now. She was never coming back.

Nick knocked on his door.

Noah jumped up and opened the knob slowly. “Yeah?”

“You good? You need anything?”

Just for life to go back to the way it was. But Noah wasn’t stupid. That wasn’t ever going to happen. His mom was dead. He was just going to have to get used to it. This was his life now. For now. “I’m…good.”

“Good…well…good night then.” Nick tried to smile, but it looked kind of stupid. “I’ll be out here if you need me.”

Yeah, right. Noah didn’t need anybody.

He was just going to remember that.
