Noah didn’t want to stare at this lady. But…she really did look like Nova. The only thing different was that her hair wasn’t as weird red. Nova’s was clown red, his mom had always said.

Nikki was really pretty, too. It was just weird seeing her and seeing how much she looked like Nova. Even the curly hair that tangled all the time. He’d cut Nova’s off once, but it had looked stupid until it grew back. He’d just gotten tired of her hair being tangled all the time.

His mom had been really mad. Said she didn’t want to take Nova anywhere looking like that. So she hadn’t. Not that they went many places to begin with. She’d said they were just too much work.

He’d never been in a diner in his entire life. He didn’t know how he was supposed to act.

They didn’t eat dinner out very much. Or lunch. Or anything else.

Mostly, they just ate sandwiches at home. Or that stupid toast.

Nova was chattering like she did sometimes. At the lady. And the other redheaded girl who had been in the back. They both looked like his little sister. More than he did.

He guessed maybe Nick really was Nova’s dad. They hadn’t lied about that. Nova had a real family now. She didn’t really need Noah anymore.

No one needed him at all.
