ADONE

Igrowled and ripped the arrow away from the wall.

Summer gulped. “That . . . It almost hit me!”

My mate was a mix of softness and stone. Her comments about her life on Eerth showed me she had strength. Why did she believe she didn’t?

“We must take care at all times,” I said. “The goal of the Game is to defeat us.”

She lifted her chin. “Then we’ll have to prove we’re not wimps, right?”

“You are correct, we are not weeps.”

Her laugh snorted out, and I stilled, watching her animated face. If only we’d met in a good place, but such a thing had not existed in my world since before I was taken.

“Our translators are not yet in sync,” I said.

“I think you’re right.”

I’d mispronounce a word in each sentence if it would make her smile again.

“There’s a scrap of cloth on the arrow,” she said, pointing. “Do you think that’s our first assignment? Rather dramatic way of delivering it, but maybe they don’t use email?” She laughed again, though the tone was high-pitched. Her hand slapped over her mouth, and she spoke around it. “I’ve got to get control. Just tell me to chill if I start freaking out.” Her laugh faced. “Don’t hit my arm.”

“I would never, precious one.”

“Hmm. No one has ever called me that before.”

“Then they have not seen you like I do.”

She leaned against me as I smoothed out the scrap of fabric and studied it. “I like you, Adone. You’re nice, and I’m glad I’m on your team.”

“Why?” I asked, as puzzled as she’d been a short time ago.

“Because you’re precious.”

I snorted. “I am a burly alien warrior. There is nothing precious about me.”

She rose onto her knees and carefully cupped my face. “Then they haven’t seen you like I do.”

I longed for this female, there was no denying it. It made me even more determined to win this game.
