He ran, still not breaking out in a sweat. His energy seemed endless, but he must feel as thirsty as me.

Stress caught up to me, and I dozed, his even pace lulling me into a restless slumber. I snuggled against his chest, taking in his clean scent.

Beasts chased me in my dreams, their deep, throaty cries chilling me to my bones.

Adone’s sudden lack of movement brought me back to consciousness. He carefully lowered me to my feet and nudged me around behind him.

Yawning, I blinked, amazed to see the hills still a long way away. I peered around, noting the ever-present monitors. Damn things.

Something grunted nearby, and it wasn’t Adone. My feverish skin prickled, and I peered around him.

We stood on a low hill overlooking a long valley. Blue sand surrounded us, like before.

The sand swirled in a big circle at the base of the hill.

Adone spun and lifted me. He bolted in the opposite direction.

I peered over his shoulder, watching in shock as scorpions the size of ponies crawled out of the sand.

The monitors released high pitched beeps, drawing the scorpions’ attention.

Spying us standing not far away, they gave chase.
