SUMMER

The second Adone’s head tucked into the hole, two scorpions scrambled from the sand beside me and latched onto my legs with their claws.

Their stingers whipped backward and in seconds, they’d impale me.

I shrieked and raced down the hillside with them giving chase. The monitors flew along with me, obviously hoping to catch some exciting action to share with the viewers.

Adone bellowed behind me. He raced down the hill and flung himself on one of the scorpions, ripping it away from my leg.

I expected Tumbles to yip and flee behind him, but he shrieked and attacked the other giant insect, rolling up onto its back. I smacked and kicked the scorpion, hoping Tumbles wasn’t speared by the creature’s tail. But Tumbles bared his sharp teeth and plunged forward, biting down on the scorpion’s spine.

The scorpion shuddered and collapsed, releasing my leg.

Tumbles hopped off the dying beast and raced to where Adone tumbled across the ground, grappling with the scorpion. He landed on his back with the insect on top, his hands holding the sharp point while the insect tried to stab him in the chest.

A yip, and Tumbles scrambled up onto the scorpion and bit down on the back of its neck. Like the first, the insect shuddered and collapsed, falling on top of Adone.

Tumbles hopped off the scorpion and rolled over to me. He stopped and his brush-like fur softened, dropping onto his bowling ball body. He cooed, and I swore he grinned up at me, proud of his accomplishments.

“Adone,” I cried, worried he was hurt. While I raced over to him, he shoved the scorpion off him and rolled to the side. He came up in a crouch, looking around for other attackers.

Tumbles yipped and raced back up the hill.

I grabbed Adone’s arm. “Are you okay?”

“I am fine,” he said, straightening. His breathing raged as he searched the area.

I was a shivering mess.

He tugged me into his arms, his wings curling around us. I loved how secure they made me feel. “I thought something had killed you.”

“It was scary for a few seconds, but you and Tumbles are my heroes. You defeated the scorpions.”

“I am not sure I made much difference.”

I leaned back in his embrace. “Would you have given up?”

“Never,” he vowed.

“Then you’re a hero. See? I told you that you were Superman, the Hulk, and Batman, all wrapped up in one amazing hot bronze guy.”

“I am hot,” he said in complete seriousness.

I snickered, a mix of passing terror and giddy humor. “You sure are.”
