SUMMER

Iwoke sometime later, still nestled against Adone’s chest. His wings were wrapped around me like long, soft arms. I felt protected. As if he cared for me as a person and not just a member of this team.

Spikes jutted up from the segments between his wings. After studying him to see if he was awake, he dozed, and he didn’t seem to realize I was awake. I watched him as he claimed a bit of rest. His face and neck may be made up of a network of fine scars, but I still found him gorgeous in a rough, alien way.

I touched one of the spikes jutting from his wings, keeping my fingertips light. The spike was hard, about three inches long, and was blunted on the tip.

I’d never imagined being close to someone with wings. That was for movies and stories about magic. But they were a part of Adone. I liked him. I liked his wings and how they held me so gently.

My heart was softening to him, and there didn’t seem to be anything I could do about it.

I didn’t have anyone waiting back on Earth. Would it be so bad to get closer to Adone?

Although, after a decent night’s sleep, I questioned my offer to teach him sexually. It had been a spontaneous, rash thing to say, something I never would’ve dreamed of doing back at the commune. But even in the light of day, I knew why I’d done it. I was attracted to him, and the thought of being with him made my body throb.

His eyes opened and looked down at me. His gaze drifted to where I still touched his wing spike. Before I could pull my hand away, he placed his over mine.

His face softened. “I’ve hated these things since Vunne sutured them to my body.”

“I understand.” Now I wished I hadn’t touched them.

“But if they bring you comfort,” he said, his voice cratered with emotion. “I am grateful I have them.”

My heart spasmed with pain. “I shouldn’t have touched them.”

“I’m glad you did.”

“Why?”

“Because it allowed me to see that you don’t despise them.”

“Not at all. They’re a part of you like your arms and gorgeous eyes.”

His smile flashed briefly. “My eyes are not gorgeous.”

“They are.”

His gaze dropped from mine. “Thank you. I . . .”

“What?”

“I worried these loathsome things Vunne gave me had turned me into a monster, but if you see me and not something horribly disfigured, I feel acceptance.”

I swallowed past the lump in my throat. Tears trickled down my face like they always did when I felt heavy emotions, and I sniffed them away. The last thing I wanted him to think was that I felt pity.

“You are not a monster. You’re Adone, and you’re special.” I stroked his shoulder, my fingers tiptoeing up to the nape of his neck. His warm skin made tingles shoot through me, his scales feeling scratchy-good against my palms. I stroked his thick bands of hair, marveling at how different yet alike we were all over. To think that two different beings could form on separate worlds yet still share similar anatomy.

“Do you want to try out that kiss?” I croaked.

“Summer,” he groaned, his voice full of longing. “There is nothing I would rather do than kiss you.”

“Then we should do it.” Easing around on his lap, I braced my knees on either side of his thighs. The wide spread of my legs made me hyperaware of how my seam gaped open, of how wet I already was. I swore I got wet just looking at him. His round, muscular ass. His thick thighs. His broad, ripped chest and arms. And the solid bulge beneath his loincloth.

His sweet personality drew me closer, and his hot body just made me want him even more.

I braced my palms on his shoulders and rose up to place my lips on his.

His arms went around me, warm and solid.
