She paused and swallowed. “Yeah, humans.”

“I do not wish to speak poorly of an entire species but . . .”

“You wouldn’t be the first to say humans suck.”

Suck…? I shook my head, not completely sure what this word meant in this context but guessing her meaning. It drained. Sucked.

“You do not suck,” I said.

A laugh snorted out of her. “We haven’t been to bed together yet, so hold that thought.” She soon sobered. “But I understand what you’re saying. I’m human, though, Adone, and I’m as flawed as the rest of my species.”

“You are their best.”

“That, I doubt. I’m just like everyone else.”

I wouldn’t remind her that she was different. She was my mate. “You do not have two hearts.”

“Nope,” she said wistfully. “I kinda wish I did. It would make the entire dating thing much easier. Bump in close and pause to see if the other person has jump-started your second heart. Nope? Walk away and find another.”

“Some do seek their mates in this way. Most find them because the demes guide them.”

“Demes?”

“Spirits. What’s left of those who came before. They are wise, and they nudge us where we need to go.”

“You think the demes nudged you toward me?”

“I know they did. Know I will not push you to feel the same way.”

“Thank you.” She searched my face, and I wondered what she saw. Hopefully someone she could one day love. That would be enough.

I lifted my project and handed the looped-together sticks to her with the mat suspended above them.

She frowned up at it, then her face cleared. “You made me an umbrella. A sunshade.”

“And now your skin will remain one color.”
