And after what felt like a long time, I woke lying on a rough bunk in a small, barred room. Voices in the hall made me sit up. While my head spun, I rose from my bunk and stumbled toward the bars spanning the front of the tiny room.

Tear stung in my eyes. So much for escaping the commune and building a new life where I could be free. Alien romance novels were my catnip, and I knew exactly what this meant. I’d been kidnapped from Earth, and if the hum reverberating through the walls and floor was anything to go by, I was traveling in a spaceship.

The only difference between my favorite books and this situation was there was no big, burly alien guy determined to rescue me. That was fantasy, not reality.

“Hello?” someone called. I staggered over to the bars, peering out while holding them to keep from falling.

Three other women had been kidnapped with me: Anna, Cami, and Jade, and from what Jade could tell, we’d been traveling for weeks. We’d been placed in suspension.

My tears wouldn’t stop falling.

The ship shuddered, and a screech rang out overhead. A thud, and the low hum stopped.

“No . . .” I whispered. “I think we’ve landed.” I peered at my friends, taking in how frightened they were too.

The door opened down the hall and eight aliens stomped our way, splitting into pairs when they arrived at each cell. Two entered mine and quickly subdued me, binding my ankles and wrists. They hauled me to my feet and shoved me down the hall and through the ship, not stopping until they’d placed me inside a smaller ship.

My new friends and I stared at each other in terror. I kept crying, but that was nothing new for me.

I focused on my fingernails after that, seeing I needed to cut them, then realizing I probably never would. For all I knew, I’d be dead before I got the chance.

The vehicle landed, and the aliens dragged us out onto a world with tall, spiky trees with dark purple leaves. Puffy pink bushes grew around the trees, and insects the size of my fist buzzed past us.

The aliens took us to a giant stone building, only stopping when Cami tried to run away. After dragging her back to us, they hustled us past tall blue aliens and through a dark tunnel. A barred door opened ahead, and without stopping, they dragged us into a big arena that would fit right in with a gladiator arena.

The only differences were the aliens filling the stands and the four giant aliens standing in the sand nearby.

When four small spaceships landed, I knew right away what was happening. They were pairing us up, and I was about to die.

A round, blob-like alien flew back and forth above us. “Ege mailer wit leeshly Earthling!” he cried, but I barely noticed him.

All I could focus on was the tallest alien of them all, a guy with thick, bulging muscles. He strode over and dropped to his knees in front of me.

It might sound like the biggest cliché, but my heart melted.

I should be scared of his orange eyes, his scales, and the spiked wings spreading out from his spine, but I wasn’t. In this alien, I sensed a kindred soul. I stroked his face, and he leaned into my touch. His soft groan rang out.

“I’m Summer, and I know you,” I whispered, though I doubt he heard me over the screams of the crowd. He wouldn’t understand me anyway. “I know this is wild and crazy to say, but I think I’ve loved you before.”
