Summer dropped my hand and rushed over to Burmoot, crooking her finger until he bent down to hear her whisper.

When she turned back, she gave me a sly smile.

“Very well,” Burmoot said. He strode close to me. “You have a wonderful mate, youngling. Make sure you take good care of her.”

My spine stiffened. “Of course I will.”

“You never know what can happen.”

I lifted the scales on my chest and flared my wings. “Is that a threat?”

He held up his hands. “No, no. Never! I’m sorry. I was only speaking kindly.”

My wings drooped, and I felt bad for letting my irritation take over, but if I’d learned anything while living with Vunne, it was that there were few I could trust. I had no reason to let Burmoot become one of them.

“I have prepared something nice for your mate,” he said softly, watching my face as if he hoped to see . . . something. I had no idea what. “Enjoy your night. The morning comes too quickly.”

Yes, with another task that would test us to our limits. The tiny bit of softening I’d started to feel for Burmoot faded. I’d be unwise to let down my guard with anyone on the Universal Council.

Strangely, he nodded as if he could read my thoughts. “I must go. The Council will notice I’m gone.”

Before I could ask why they didn’t know he was here already, he engaged the propulsion devices strapped to his arms and legs and soared off the ground. A hatch opened in the dome roof, and he shot through, the monitors right behind him. The hatch quietly slid shut.

“Alone at last.” Summer skipped over and took my hand. She tugged me toward yet another hill. “Come on. Our reward awaits.”

“What is it?” I couldn’t imagine what she might’ve asked for.

We topped the hill, and she leaned into my side. “Isn’t it lovely?”

An oasis made up of fruit-laden trees and a large pool of water waited for us a short distance away.
