He started flapping, and his groan slipped out.

“What’s wrong?”

“They are stiff. It hurts to use them.”

“I assume like any muscle that doesn’t get much use it’ll take time to build strength?”

“You could be right.” He stopped flapping and extended his wings, floating. Only this time, he allowed the gusts to take us away from the slope. He soared out across the enormous cavern, and only now did I make out the sandy bottom that looked just like the area we’d recently left.

The only difference were the leafless, tall spiky trees, and the big, six-legged creatures with long snouts and huge horns who roamed the surface.

One of the monitors dove down and bumped into a creature’s side. It bellowed and charged the mechanical device, which soared up out of reach.

But it had accomplished its mission.

The beasts looked up as we coasted above them.

A few bellowed challenges, and the others echoed the sound. At least thirty of them milled among the trees.

As we passed over them, they pivoted and raced beneath us, slashing their horns toward us.

I gulped.

It was vital that Adone maintain flight. If we dropped down to the ground, the beasts would attack.
