“I’m sorry.” I couldn’t imagine losing Summer. She was my everything, the only reason I had to keep living.

“It has been a long time, yet in my hearts, it feels like today.”

“She made your second heart start beating like Summer has with me,” I said.

“That is the way of true mates, is it not? They complete us.”

“Why are you being kind to us?” I turned on the bench to watch him, eager to read his expression. There was something about this male I couldn’t define. It haunted me, and I wouldn’t stop questioning until I’d discovered everything about him.

He kept his face in shadows as if he didn’t wish for me to see too much. What could he reveal that I wouldn’t already know? Summer and I were given to the Galaxy Games, and we would win, or we would lose. He was merely our host, the one setting up each task and granting us respite if we were lucky enough to finish.

“I’m a helper. I was kind with each of your brothers too. As much as I could be.”

“I’m glad they completed their Games and were granted their freedom.”

He nodded slowly. “Yes, all of you deserve it. A grave injustice was done to you for far too long. I tried to . . .”

“What?”

“It is nothing.”

I gripped his shoulder. “No, I believe it is something. What aren’t you telling me?”

“I say all I can.” He tugged himself away from my hand. “I do all I can. Trust that I have your best interests in my heart for you, Adone.”

“But why?” My voice came out guttural, though I had no idea why. Who cared if this male shared anything with me? I wouldn’t see him after we finished the Game.

A splash in the river caught my attention, but I saw nothing but the rings spreading wider.

When I turned back to Burmoot, he was gone.
