“I want it to be his decision,” I said, my chest was a big ball of ache. If he didn’t come with us, well . . . I didn’t want to think about that. “I told him what was happening, but I doubt he understands.” Tears streamed down my face. I could never hold them back, but maybe that was okay. Here, my tears had saved our lives.

“We cannot wait long,” Adone said. “The ship is programmed to leave within a few ticks. If we’re not inside when it takes off, it will leave without us.”

“I won’t call him,” I said softly. “I can’t do that. If he comes here on his own, I’ll be able to believe he understands on some level and that this is what he wants.”

Adone gathered me in his arms, and we backed inside the ship, watching my little friend who stared up at us.

Tumbles turned and looked out at the desert. This was it; he was going to roll away and I’d never see him again.

He turned back to us, and in his eyes, I read acceptance. Maybe a hint of understanding. He bared his tiny teeth, and his fur bristled, standing out stiffly.

Then he quickly rolled up the ramp and joined us inside the ship.
