“I know. I was degrading.”

“Rapidly. It was like there was acid eating you cell by cell.”

Riithan held her close and stroked a hand down her back.

Torenne looked at the stinger, “Which I suppose there was.”

“Kritz is taking a look at it. He says it’s natural destruction in liquid form. That’s what it felt like.” She sighed and started losing power. “Riithan? I feel kind of tired.” Her head drooped.

“It’s okay. You need to rest, so your body can recover. Just let go. I’ve got you, and I am not letting go.”

She heard the soft words and let her body drop.

* * * *

Riithan felt her weight as she went boneless. He checked her pulse, and it was slow and steady. He exhaled in relief.

He looked at Salat. “If you and yours don’t mind, I want to get her home.”

Her niece looked at him. “Where’s home?”

“Daycross.”

She gave a smug smile. “She said that is where she would live now.”

Riithan sighed in relief again. Ylara had known she would live with him. That was a plus.

He looked at his parents. “Shall we be on our way?”

His father grinned. “From the most patient to impatient. Trying to get her confined before she wakes up?”

“No, trying to get her comfortable before she wakes up. I have only seen two survivors of my venom, and their recoveries were long and painful.”

His father grinned. “But they are now two of our best and strongest.”

Riithan got to his feet, holding her against him. He inclined his head toward Khytten. “Thank you for your hospitality and efforts to keep her alive.”

Khytten smiled. “Either she will visit here in two weeks, or I am going to visit her. Just a warning.”

Riithan looked at her and nodded. “I understand. Having gained a bit of knowledge about her family, keeping you from her and vice versa would be a very stupid move on my part. And I only have one stupid move on my ledger, and I am working hard to expunge it.”

Salat smiled.

Her niece got up, and to his surprise, he got a hug.

“Take care of her, or I will learn how to use a gun and find you. She’s super special, and I think you are beginning to understand it.”

“Well, all right. Is there anything you want when you visit?”

The small teen looked at him with narrowed eyes. “A horse?”

He burst out laughing. “Done.”

“Good. Auntie was going to spend her money, but I think that horses on Daycross are more expensive than normal.”

He nodded. “They are, and no problem. That is simple.”

She nodded. “The offer to shoot you still stands until she’s relaxed and happy.”
