CHAPTER24

Lacy couldn’t seemto catch her breath as Jonah and Candy stood smiling and talking together. Was this why he wanted to call things off with her?

He’d promised to not sleep with anyone else while sleeping with her. Now he’d be free to be with someone more experienced like Candy. Who he wouldn’t have to help figure out how to move with him. Who just knew more and probably had tricks that made men into her love slaves.

Lacy downed about half of her margarita, the liquid burning like acid sliding down her throat. When Candy kept her hand on Jonah’s arm, Lacy finished the rest of her margarita to try to cool the flame inside her stomach. Instead her stomach clenched painfully.

She needed to be mature about this. She agreed to no strings. She just didn’t count on falling in love with Jonah. It was probably for the best he ended things before she got too attached. Still, he could have waited at least a few days to hook up with someone else.

“Who’s the chick with Jonah?” Logan leaned forward with his eyes practically devouring Candy.

“I only know her name is Candy.” Lacy reached for the pitcher and refilled her empty glass. Of course, she’d gotten an eyeful of Candy the night she saw her.

“I wouldn’t mind some Candy,” Logan said under his breath.

“You should go meet her.” Lacy brightened at the thought. Yeah, Logan could distract her from Jonah. “I’m sure Jonah would be happy to introduce you to her.”

Logan’s eyebrows drew together as he looked at Lacy. “You’re not a normal girl, are you, Lace?”

She pressed her lips together and shook her head. “Probably not.”

His hand closed over her shoulder when he got up. She looked up at him. His eyes were kind and curious.

“We should talk more,” he said. He squeezed her shoulder.

“Sure.” She would have laughed, but his expression was actually serious. If he’d said that to her last month, she would have been floating on air. But now, she just wanted him to break up the Jonah and Candy show so the tight knot in her chest would loosen.

Rubbing her hand absently over the ache in her chest, she tried not to watch as Logan walked over and started talking with Candy and Jonah. Jonah glanced her way, checking in on her. Probably because he thought she still loved Logan, she just shrugged and took a drink before trying to focus on the conversation happening around her.

Candy grabbed Jonah’s arm and whispered something in his ear. He nodded and she grinned. Lacy drew on her straw, surprised when nothing come out. She must be hella thirsty.

“Plans for the weekend, Lacy?” Phoebe’s voice drew her back to the table and her coworkers. Crying her eyes out probably wouldn’t be an acceptable answer.

“The usual. Laundry, reading, errands.” She glanced toward Jonah, but only he and Logan stood there, talking. Where the fuck did Candy go?

“Hello, kitty.” Candy slipped into Logan’s seat next to her.

Oh, fuck. Lacy closed her eyes and took a breath. She could not hiss at the woman. She needed to shake the jealousy off herself right now. She opened her eyes to Candy’s green ones. Not sure why Candy was even over here. They didn’t really know each other. “Hi?”

“Last time we met you didn’t say a word.” Candy picked up Logan’s beer and finished it. “Jonah really won’t say anything about you, so I figured I’d come over and see how you like living with Jonah.”

“It’s fine,” Lacy bit out and refilled her glass with the pitcher to keep her hands from around this woman’s neck. Her insides burned. She’d never wanted to do physical harm to another person before. Not even Chet. But Candy brought out that side of her.

“All I can imagine is that beautiful body on display twenty-four seven.” Candy pursed her lips as she raked her gaze over Jonah.

Lacy nodded and drank down her margarita. His body was beautiful and so fucking tempting. She didn’t know how she would manage to be around him now that they weren’t having sex.

Candy laughed. “I was hoping to convince him to invite me over tonight, but he said he’s flying out. Isn’t that the way with him. One day he’s there and the next gone. But his body is worth the wait.”

Lacy was intimately familiar with Jonah’s body. All the dips and curves and the hardness. . . . God, the hardness. Her cheeks flushed, but she couldn’t tell if it was from the three margaritas she’d just pounded or from thinking about Jonah’s hardness.

“I hope he doesn’t get that job though. I’d love it if he stayed here.” Candy pulled Lacy out of her reminiscence.

“What?” What job? Jonah had a job with her.

“Having access to that man every weekend would be awesome.” Candy refilled Logan’s mug and drank more. “Can you imagine?”

Imagining Jonah and Candy having sex every weekend turned Lacy’s stomach so suddenly she almost puked right there. All over Candy and her barely-there outfit. Lacy bolted from the table toward the bathroom.
