“You okay, kitty?” Candy’s voice followed her, but no one else did.

Lacy burst into the bathroom and clung to the sink. Her stomach settled a little, but then she thought of Candy bent over the counter with Jonah thrusting behind her. It was burned into Lacy’s memory. Before it had intrigued her, now it gouged at her insides like a beast. The mirror reflected her pale face, and she leaned her forehead down onto the cool sink.

She couldn’t do this. She wasn’t mature enough for this. To watch the man she loved fuck another woman. To watch him bring another into his bed, knowing exactly what he’d do. How he’d touch her.

Her heart felt like a piece of paper, crumpled hard in his fist and lit on fire. She couldn’t breathe. The air wouldn’t come to her.

Pulling out her phone, she texted Beth.I am so fucked.

She wet a napkin and held it to her neck. She couldn’t go out there. She couldn’t be around Candy and not break down. Sure he wasn’t bringing Candy hometonight, but how long before he had an “itch” and called her.

Claws shredded her insides until she could barely stand.

What happened?Beth texted.

So much.Lacy choked on a sob but refused to cry.

I messed up.Lacy pushed send and then continued.I had sex with Jonah. A lot. No strings. And we ended it, but I can’t think about him sleeping with someone else without feeling like someone is stabbing me in the gut.

Three dots showed up. Lacy cooled the napkin again in the water and held it to her neck.

I’m coming.

Her stomach settled. Beth would help her through this. It had only been a fucking week after all. She’d never felt this twisting pain before though. Not even when her crushes made out with a girl right in front of her. She couldn’t go out there. She couldn’t face the possibility of Candy draped all over Jonah.

But she had to. Maybe Candy was right where Lacy left her, just waiting to rub Lacy’s face in her torrid affair with Jonah. Lacy shook her head and stared at herself in the mirror.Get yourself together. She could do this. She could go out there and pretend her heart wasn’t a pile of ash.

She stayed in the bathroom for a few more minutes until she didn’t look like she’d seen a ghost. Taking deep breaths, she held her own gaze in the mirror. As long as she didn’t have to see Candy and Jonahtogethertogether, she’d be fine. She could do this.

Just pretend he was like every other guy she had a crush on. Who he was with didn’t matter because eventually he’d be with her. A tear slipped from her eye, but she fought back the rest. She could breakdown in bed later. All alone with the scent of ocean and Jonah all over her sheets.

She drew in several deep breaths and blew them out through her mouth. She could do this.

She pushed out of the bathroom and headed to the table. Everyone, including Jonah, was in their seats and Candy was nowhere to be seen. Her chest loosened slightly as she dropped into the seat next to Logan. Maybe Candy wouldn’t be an issue tonight. After all, he’d turned Lacy down for tonight and she was convenient.

“You just missed Candy.” Logan leaned on the table.

Couldn’t say that she missed her. “Oh, that’s too bad.”

“Apparently she’s going to a club. I’m thinking of hitting it up after this. You want to go?” Logan took a drink of his beer.

Seriously? He wanted her to go to a club so he can try to hookup with Jonah’s ex hookup who might become his current hookup again because he dumped Lacy? Nah.

“I’m kind of tired. I’m going to call it a night after this.” Lacy tried to give him a tired smile. “But thanks for asking.”

“Anytime.” Logan seemed happily clueless as always. He leaned across the table to talk with Claire.

Lacy tried her hardest not to look at Jonah. She didn’t want to think about him and Candy picking back up where they left off. Lacy must have just been an anomaly. An attraction he had to get out of his system, and apparently, he did. Now he would be free to leave and find other women to fuck.

Oh, God, what if the reason he wanted to end things was because he had a woman out in L.A.? She was spiraling again so she filled her glass again and downed the cool margarita. Maybe once the tequila hit, she wouldn’t think anymore. Especially about Jonah.

“Maybe you should slow down?” Emily’s soft voice came from beside her.

Lacy turned a little too fast and the room spun around her. She grabbed onto the edge of the table to keep herself upright.

Once the room stopped, she said, “I’m fine.”

Sure, it was a little slurred, but the man she loved was leaving her. She deserved a little libation to make the pain go away. At least she no longer felt like crying or throwing up. Now if the room would stop spinning, everything would be sweet.
