He broke her heart yesterday.

Two weeks ago, he would have laughed off her declaration of love. How could anyone fall in love in such a short amount of time? It didn’t seem possible. But as he stood there this morning, he wanted nothing more than to go in and beg her forgiveness. Tell her how stupid he’d been. Tell her the words he couldn’t find the night before or had been too scared to say out loud.

“As long as I had Roxie and you kids, the place didn’t matter.” His father held out the remote and changed to a football game. “The stuff never mattered to me, but it did to your mom. That made it matter to me.”

Jonah rubbed the back of his neck and almost said fuck, but his father didn’t like swearing.

Lacy had become the one thing he couldn’t leave behind. He’d thought he’d eventually leave her because that was what he’d always done, but this morning he could barely leave without her. He might not be the right guy for her, but he couldn’t let her go. Not until she knew how he felt about her. Not without trying.

But it wasn’t just her—granted it was mostly her, but he also liked working at Taylor and King. Tossing ideas around with Phoebe. Emily’s welcoming smile every morning. Claire and Logan’s weird friendship. The confidence both Drew and Morgan projected to every one of their employees.

Working with his little bird. Watching her spread her wings at work and in bed.

He hadn’t been gone even twenty-four hours and he already missed Lacy. He’d missed her last night in his bed. Holding her while her breath deepened and she slipped into sleep against his heart.

Jonah lifted his head and looked at his father. “I think I screwed up, Dad.”
