CHAPTER27

Lacy spunin her office chair on Friday afternoon. Apparently, this week had been a negotiated week of vacation time for Jonah. Not that Jonah had told her, but when he hadn’t come home by Monday afternoon, Lacy had asked. She’d been afraid he’d quit and taken whatever job he’d run off to interview for. Even though she was sad, she was glad Jonah hadn’t just quit.

This week had dragged without Jonah. Over the weekend, Beth had been there with her and Sophie, and they’d both kept Lacy’s spirits up. They’d eaten way too much ice cream and watched romantic comedies.

Jonah never completely left her mind, but she’d had moments where her heart didn’t feel completely obliterated.

“I swear.” Claire’s voice made Lacy stop her random spinning.

Logan and Claire stopped on their way to their desks and stared at her. Yeah, she’d been spinning like a kid instead of working on the art sheet for the Patterson ad, so what.

“What do you swear?” Lacy asked. It wasn’t like they knew she and Jonah had had a thing. Or that Lacy loved Jonah. Or her heart had been broken. But they still walked on eggshells around her. Even she admitted she’d been less than enthusiastic for work this week. But at least she’d shown up, which is more than she could say about Jonah.

A gleam hit Logan’s eyes as he smiled. “There’s this new place we want to check out. You wanna come with us tonight? The whole gang will be there.”

Sophie had left Tuesday for parts unknown, leaving Lacy all alone in the apartment with only her memories of Jonah. Last night she’d snuck into his room and slept in his bed because the pillow of hers had stopped smelling like him.

Maybe instead of crushing on someone, she’d start stalking. Move up the food chain a notch.

“It’s a new place everyone is anxious to try,” Logan said. Claire elbowed him in the side.

Lacy’s brows drew together. She didn’t have anything better to do but he was pushing really hard. What was going on?

Claire held up her hands. “He’s obviously not selling this place well.”

Lacy sighed. It didn’t really matter where they went. Anywhere was better than home. “Ok.”

Logan and Claire seemed super excited about this new place; besides it kept Lacy from going home to an empty apartment for at least one night. Hopefully it would wear her out and she’d pass out as soon as she got home.

She barely noticed when Logan and Claire disappeared again. Today had been like that. The only one Lacy saw most of the day was Emily. Everyone else seemed occupied. She stopped her spinning and pulled up to her desk. Her gaze fell on Jonah’s desk and the remnants of her heart pulsed in her chest.

Melodrama 101, Beth would say if she were here.

Lacy glanced around and since no one was here, she picked up her phone and looked at the last text Jonah had sent her.Stay fierce, little bird.

She never did ask him why he called her that. Maybe he called all his women that. She couldn’t even get mad anymore. All she wanted was to see him. She’d settle for being friends again, but she couldn’t text him about it. She’d have to wait until he showed up, which should be Sunday at the latest. After all, he still had work on Monday.

“Let’s get this show on the road.” Phoebe clapped as she came out of Drew and Morgan’s office.

“What are we doing?” Lacy could pretend to work. After all it was only four in the afternoon. They had an hour before quitting time.

“Grab your things, wild child. We’re hitting a new place tonight.” Phoebe blew Lacy a kiss.

“Isn’t it too early?” Not that Lacy had been getting much done. But still she should probably work the rest of the day because her whole week hadn’t been very inspiring. Her body had been at work, but her mind and heart had been elsewhere.

“Not tonight.” Drew came out of his office followed by Morgan. “Since we worked extra hard last week, we deserve to cut out a little early.”

Everyone gathered in the front lobby, even Emily seemed excited for this “new place.”

“Do you know where we’re going?” Lacy asked Emily covertly.

Emily shook her head.

“Multiple cars will be needed. I’ve got an Uber minivan and an Uber MINI Cooper.” Phoebe looked up from her phone.

“Lacy and I will take the MINI Cooper.” Logan threw his arm around her shoulder and tugged her into him.

Lacy shrugged. It didn’t matter to her.
