CHAPTER5

Jonah started forward, but Drew stood closer to Lacy and got there first.

“Are you okay?” Drew patted her softly on the back as she nodded and waved him away.

“I’m good,” she choked out and lifted her gaze to Jonah’s again. Her brown eyes were huge.

Jonah smiled. How could he not? Little bird was here too. Of course she was. Brenda had mentioned she worked in advertising, but at the time, he hadn’t thought anything of it. The city had its fair share of advertising firms, after all. Honestly, he hadn’t given any real thought to his two new roommates-to-be, because they would all go about their own business and not interact. That plan had gone up in smoke.

Morgan moved to stand next to Drew, asking Lacy, “Are you sure you’re okay? Do you want a water or something?”

Lacy shook her head. “Just went down the wrong pipe is all.”

Morgan smiled and held out a hand to Jonah. “Jonah Sinclair. Lacy Hatcher. She’s an experienced copywriter, but she’s been doing a lot more since she started working with us.”

“Lacy.” Jonah held out his hand and raised an eyebrow at her, wondering if she’d take his hand after he’d made it a point of ignoring hers when she first offered.

Her lips thinned and her eyes narrowed on his hand. “You know they see our employment forms. They’ll know we’re roommates and realize we’ve probably met before today.”

He withdrew his hand and stroked it down his beard. He shrugged. “Haven’t filled out any HR forms yet.”

Drew and Morgan watched them for a moment before Drew laughed. “Well then, you don’t need introductions. Lacy, would you be able to show Jonah around and introduce him to the rest of the team? We’ve got a call in five minutes.”

Lacy stood and ran her hands over her slacks. “No problem.”

Jonah wondered if he made her nervous. Or was she remembering their weekend together?

Morgan smiled at them before following Drew into the office, leaving them alone.

“Where is everyone?” Jonah looked around the office, surprised to see only the two of them in it.

“Phoebe comes in later. The others are around.” Lacy sighed and closed her eyes for a second. When she opened them, she seemed determined. “Okay, so you probably met Emily on the way in.”

He nodded. Focus on work, definitely a good plan.

“Your desk is there.”

His sat directly across from hers and she’d be in his sightline all day long. “Great.”

“Don’t sound so enthusiastic.” She rolled her eyes.

“Got enough coffee in your system now?”

Her eyes narrowed at him. She seemed less than thrilled he was here, but it didn’t matter. This was work. He’d be able to put his head down and ignore her for the majority of the day.

A couple came out of a room laughing. The brunette paused and waited, while the guy figured out what was going on.

Lacy motioned for Jonah to follow her. “Jonah Sinclair. Claire Lake.”

Claire shook his hand, very perfunctory. Her dark eyes swept over him though and he could detect a hint of interest there. She was all curves and long dark hair. Her heels brought her almost to eye level with him.

He kept his smile strictly friendly. Most corporations were okay with employees being friends, but usually not good with dating amongst coworkers. It happened sometimes, but in an office this small, it would only amount to trouble.

“Logan O’Connell,” Lacy said.

That was a name he remembered. “You must be Lacy’s—”

“Nope. We don’t have work partners here.” Lacy interrupted and smiled huge, but Jonah could tell she gritted her teeth. “We work as one team instead of in divisions. So we’re all in the trenches together.”
