She narrowed her eyes at Jonah who just flashed her a smile. He was like an entirely different person.

The office had almost emptied out. Morgan and Drew were still in their office with the door closed. They were the only true workaholics at the company, but they seemed to like it that way. Most everyone put in extra hours as well. But typically not on Mondays. The company was still growing. The extra work to build up the business would pay off.

Lacy grabbed her coffee mug and took it into the breakroom to rinse it and to start the dishwasher.

“One more.” Jonah stopped next to her at the sink and rinsed his cup quickly. He placed it in the dishwasher and Lacy closed it. He leaned against the counter next to her while she finished setting it. “Want to carpool?”

She glanced up at his smiling expression. He’d barely smiled this whole weekend. Now it was like he couldn’t stop smiling. “Doesn’t that make your face hurt?”

He didn’t even blink at her question. “Come on. I’ve got a Lyft waiting.”

“You’re paying.” She shrugged. She had to get home and they were heading to the same place. Stopping at her desk, she grabbed her purse.

He chuckled, but it was lower and darker than it had been during the day, sending shivers racing down her spine. “You want me to buy you dinner too?”

“My god, don’t you ever shut up?” She raised her eyebrow at him.

“Touché.” He gestured toward the doors.

She inhaled and made her way out into the lobby with him hot on her trail. This day had been never-ending. By some miracle, she hoped Jonah had forgotten their earlier conversation about Logan. She really didn’t want to discuss her love life or lack thereof with her new roommate and coworker. The elevator opened and they got in and moved to the back. For a second, they were the only ones on it, until the doors opened a floor down and more people crowded on.

Jonah moved closer to her to make room for the people. His ocean scent flowed over her and his shirtsleeve brushed her bare arm. A flutter started low in her abdomen. Her breath caught in her throat as an image of him coming out of the bathroom this morning, water coursing down his muscles, flooded her senses. She tried to shift away from him, but there was nowhere to go.

His head tipped toward her like he wanted to start a conversation, but she refused to lift her gaze to his and instead stared at the numbers above the elevator doors. The back of his hand brushed the back of hers and a flurry of butterflies swept through her. His gaze was still on her. Even though she didn’t look, she could feel it like an itch underneath her skin.

The elevator stopped on the ground floor and people pouring out. She hurried to follow but knew she couldn’t get too far away from Jonah. They were headed home together. He just made her feel weird inside. It wasn’t normal.

His hand grasped her elbow and guided her toward a different exit than the one she had headed for. His fingers were warm on her bare skin. She allowed him to lead her out the doors and to the car. Too aware of his touch on her to feel truly sane. He opened the car door for her. When he released her arm, she exhaled, not realizing she’d been holding her breath. She slid in and kept sliding across the seat so he had room. Her skin burned from where he’d held her and she rubbed it, hoping to erase the feeling.

The ride was silent and tense. When they got home, he would ask about Logan, but what could she say? She had a huge crush on a guy who was so far out of her league it might never happen? He was kind of a player and she didn’t hit any of his requirements for his type of woman. Not new news, but the next bit had hit hard this morning. He was in an experimental phase which could last who knows how long. And worse, her own experience was miniscule compared to his and she had no idea what he would even like or if she was even qualified to try with a guy like him.

She’d been called sweet and caring, but no one in their right mind would call her sexy. She was more likely the one you wanted to cuddle on the couch with during a movie, not bend over the kitchen counter. Her face flushed at the memory.

Not going there.

What if she was bad at sex? In college it had been over almost as soon as it started and the whole experience had left her feeling less than. He’d been her crush of the moment and had used that to get her to sleep with him. He’d dropped her immediately after. Maybe it was because she’d been bad at sex and he hadn’t wanted to repeat it.

What if she finally got the man of her dreams but she couldn’t live up to his standards and lost him. Of course, she’d have to get him first, which meant actually sticking to “the plan.”

She followed distractedly as Jonah led the way up to their apartment and unlocked the door. She stepped in and put her purse on the table, still lost in her thoughts.

The door closed with a finality and she jumped. Her breath caught and she waited.

“I’m ordering a pizza. You want some?” Jonah brushed past her and sat in a living room chair.

“What?” Lacy lifted her head and stared at Jonah for a second. His gaze remained on his phone. She walked around the couch and sank down on it. She stared at her hands. “Pizza. Yeah, sure.”

“Veggie, okay?”

She glanced at him. “Yeah.”

“Done.” He slid his phone into his pocket. “What’s going on in that head of yours?”

“Nothing.” She slid her eyes shut, trying to block out all the thoughts of being bad at sex and Logan only being a fantasy. Maybe she should just get on one of those apps and find a guy. Someone who thought cuddling was the best way to spend Saturday night.

Jonah leaned forward with his elbows on his knees and nudged her leg with his.

She reluctantly lifted her gaze and his blue eyes held her in place, like he could see past her bull.
